SANFL Structure 2013

There has been a lot of talk and speculation, but what is going to happen with the SANFL in 2013?

Is it likely to just stay as is with 9 teams and Crows & Power players scattered through the 9 clubs as they are now?

Will Crows & Power have reserves sides either in SANFL reserves or the VFL?

Will Port Magpies continue?

Surely there is some knowledge out there as to what will happen? When will we find out?

Clubs are doing it tuff financially in 2012.

2013 will be that little bit harder.

What is known about the Port concept of having a Power assistant that coaches the Magpies? Where did this come from? Does it have greater implications/is it part of a bigger plan for 2014?

I am hearing that the Crows still think they are a chance of having their own reserves side next year, I'm not sure where or how yet?

Sourcing "top up" players is still the biggest issue for SANFL clubs more so than losing AFL listed players IMHO.

Where will the Crows get the other players required for a seconds team ? Maybe they can play a few players short or with no bench because the result won't matter anyway ?
Most ridiculous proposal I have ever heard. It ain't brolen, don't fix it !

Agree top-up is still the biggest issue. On top of the 15-20 AFL players, will need at least another 15-20 week-in week-out. Even if these come from interstate recruits, the Crows and Power will be in the same recruiting market as the SANFL clubs, which will further weaken our comp, with, in addition to the two expansion clubs, I think has had an impact. I don't think with 9 teams the standard will really hold up if this was the case.
Perhaps the one solution is they are able to contract players coming out of U/18's for one year only, then have to draft if they want? Sure, there would be a handful lost to SANFL league teams, but many are still playing ressies or leave the SANFL system in the first year out of u/18's, and it may give the incentive for 20-23 yo's to hang around SANFL clubs for another year in the hope of getting a league game.

I reckon the top up players should come from the Ammo's and local leagues. The 20-23 year olds who for whatever reason have opted out of the SANFL but are mature age rookie types 21-25 years of age. A chance for a 2nd crack at it but the added bonus of training at an AFL club.

Protects the SANFL clubs from player losses of the kids they are currently getting funded for and most cases adding additional finding to develop.

So these players are not good enough to play SANFL for Port, Glenelg etc. but are good enough to play for the Crows Reserves in the SANFL ????? Come on !
Crows/Power seperate reserves are a financial luxury neither club can afford, especially if they play in a lesser Comp like the VFL. More cost less reward .... lunacy !

Perhaps a combined Crows/Power reserves team could round the SANFL up to 10? ;)
But could they agree on a coach...

The Crows believe that this concept is worth the investment and they can afford to start it next year. It is possible they would go down the path of playing glorified trial games each week and not being part of any official competition, similar to the proposed trial vs Norwood late in the year. Freo, West Coast, VFL teams, SANFL teams could all be prospective opponents if they can solve the top up problem.
