Noy sure that 'walked' is the right terminology...

Roy probably would have coached Central for another 10 years but his personal circumstances changed and he is at a point where coaching is now 3rd or 4th precedence to other personal matters...

He has a very young family and probably hasn't seen much of his kids grow up and he has recently taken ownership of a Real Estate business in the northern suburbs...

His priorities have changed and if he has in fact decided to not coach Central anymore, I certainly uderstand his reasoning why he wont go on. Regardless of what he does, he has been superb...

LOL - good to see my mates taking the piss!

Seriously if he has decided not to go on then his obvious replacement is not that far south of Elizabeth - Matthew Slade. Multiple premiership player, genuinely good bloke and has been great for North under Francou.

But if he is not in the running I am going for any combination of Jars, Healy, Hart, McDermott with Michael Flynn as performance / fitness coach! Hell why not just get them all!

Well presuming CDFC want him, he has walked away from a contract hasn't he?

Have heard a lot of things have changed in his life recently...

No Laird, No Gowans', no problems...

Everyone is replacable. The Dogs will still be up there for a few years to come, still...

Yeah BP you are probably right.

While many will hope the opposite, I still think there is enough class in the footy club for them to be around the mark for a little while yet. It might be the beginning of a downward slide but not sure it will drastic, perhaps just gradual.

Not so sure about that. While the club is bigger than the individual and Central have many that have made it one of the greatest - the Gowans twins with 9 premierships each and Roy Laird with 7 premierships as coach just can't be easily replaced. Records like that don't just happen. These are pretty special individuals with records that stand with the very best in the history of the SANFL.

PS. I think the Dogs will still be "up there" but there is a difference between being around the mark and winning premierships pretty much every season.

I think "retire" is a more appropirate term to use in this case.

Chris & James Gowans didn't quit the Bulldogs
James Allan didn't quit the Roosters
Jeremy Clayton didn't quit the Magpies
Justin Cicolella didn't quit the Eagles.

in all cases after some long and distinquished service they retired and I think the same language should apply to ROY LAIRD.

How many SANFL coaches have been at the same club continuously as the head coach for 10 seasons?

The term "quitting" has with it the negative connotation of not seeing out a commitment.

Roy Laird has fully seen out his current commitments but has decided not to commit further.

Good luck Roy in whatever the future holds, I will miss trying the think up a new question to ask you every year at the Grand Final Media Conference..

Roy will finish up in pretty esteemed company there...

Quit - Leave (a place), usually permanently. To stop, cease, or discontinue.

Seems appropriate to me.

Might seem 'appropriate' to you, but it is not truly refelective of the situation, overall...

Regardless of how it is worded, Roy will go down as one of the great coaches the League has had...
