THIEVES have broken into West Adelaide Football Club and stolen a 150kg safe containing $30,000.

West Adelaide chief executive Kym Russell said cleaners notified police at about 3.45am on Tuesday, after finding a rear door jemmied open and cabinets lying on the floor.

Mr Russell said security camera footage showed three people entering the clubrooms, but the offenders could not be identified.

"The thieves dragged and pushed the entire safe out of the room," Mr Russell said.

"They knew exactly what they were after and where to find it.

"It's very frustrating because although our insurance will cover most of the loss we are still out of pocket $30,000 in the meantime."

Mr Russell said the majority of money stolen was takings from the bar and gaming room, from the night before.

A Sturt Police spokeswoman said it was too early to determine whether the offenders had inside knowledge of the club.

She said detectives from the Criminal Investigation Branch were investigating.

Hopefully they didn't steal the brown paper bags .. Just kidding .. Shitty news and situation for the Bloods, here's hoping the insurance comes through swiftly for them and doesn't cause too much interruption to the clubs cycle.

Wonder what their alarm system is like, pretty crappy one would say if the breaking has been found by the cleaners.

To go in and get a safe would activate multiple alarms and the Police would attend.

Sounds like someone inside may know something like that

I got a vague memory of a whole lot of guernseys getting pinched from the Westies rooms over the summer one year. Reckon it was 1988 or thereabouts.

The Police have a new lead in this matter apparently.

They are seeking any witnesses to 3 men with very dusty clothes, apparently they broke into the trophy cabinet before trying the safe! Also missing apparently from the safe was Andrew Collins play book on attacking / offensive football. Police have asked that the public keep an eye out also for a red and black coloured postage stamp sized play book.
