Heard about this rumour at Unley on Sunday. Aparrently a caller on 5AA put the rumour out there. This was quickly put to bed as Chris Davies called the station in an attempt to defuse the rumour.

This is obviously not correct but heh, if it is then maybe some of those players are on performance based contracts  Maybe the Eagles are penny pinching for some 'Serious Recruits' this time around after a Monty Python crack at it last year. The Footy dept. must have been well oiled up after a month on the cans to take Eddy over Cachia and Batsanis
Sumner aside, it's been a large reason for sliding backwards and to think otherwise is to defend against the obvious really!
Penny pinch for recruits that make a difference...... now that's the most promising thing we have pulled off all season :o

Craig Parry has been offered a 2 year deal and a promise by the club that they will recruit some tough, strong players so half the league side can be carried by others for a change  [ Mr Davies ]
Preseason skill work will be priority No.1 until there is some improvement ffs, it's league footy isn't it? [ Mr Godden ]
Funds available for new players despite club renovation etc. [ Mr Slaven ]
Last game at home against West should be known to be celebrated farewell for a few of the club champions

So which senior players will go on and who will retire at season's end?

McKenzie, Cica, Powell, Shirley, Parry and Jarrad are names I can think of who are in their late twenties? Of these, only Cica, Shirley and Powell will be in their 30s next year, but McKenzie may have found the travelling too tough and there seems to have been talk about Parry and Jarrad at the end of last year.

Parry and Jarrad should be high priorities, they are still playing their best football. Shirley would be important to retain next year if Powell, Cica and Macca retire.

Jarrad is a certain starter as I asked him myself! Shirls and Cicca I've been told will most likely pull the pin; Macca I think would like to keep going despite the obvious issues while Powell will go around again next year but needs backup something shocking  .
Right now the elephant in the clubrooms at Oval Ave is Craig Parry.
One could argue that over the three years he's played at the club, he's been and still is our most important player. One that sets the tone with his commitment to compete and win. If we had a better mix of run and carry to go with the scrapping on the ground midfield types, Parry's work would be rated even higher.
Parry's contract or lack of one, must be the No.1 issue for now....... recuiting starts at Oval Ave Goddsy?

That's pretty much how I see it too Holden. Jarrad, Macca, Powell to continue.
Can't understand why Parry wouldn't go on, only (29?) and still in his best form. Surely another two years at least in him.

I don't know that he is for sure but I have heard it from a business acquaintance of his. At 29 he should have more league footy in him but he has had a number of injuries with his shoulder.

Macca you would think would be a certain out next season with his job in Melbourne. It's been tough for him to train in Melbourne during the week and then commute to Adelaide to play on the weekends. He's been a great servant of our club and it's says something about the guy's character to do what he has done this year. Cicca playing well and should continue, the same should be said of Powell. I would find it strange he be given the club captaincy if he intended to go out at the end of this season. Parry is still the League's best ruckman and would be an almost certain starter for next season. Shirley has got better and better as the year has gone on, is super fit. I would be surprised to see him finish at the end of the year. And Jarrad the only concern would be a possible return to Vic but I believe he has committed to at least another season.

Good to hear re Jarrad. Agree, Parry would definitely be the most important signing for next year.

Would be very happy to see McKenzie and Powell keep going.

Cica is a champion of the club and deserves to see the season out on his terms. I think he has squeezed everything out of himself to play this long and would not want to see him go on next year and be fighting for his spot. If Shirley is going to retire, I'd rather see him do it now or a younger player take his spot for the rest of the season, although he seems fit/athletic enough to keep going next year.

I still think we need to bring some young midfielders through for the last part of this season.

Surely the little ranga in the 2's, Angus Poole, will get his League debut at some stage?
Regularly named in the Reserves best players and had about 38 touches last week at Unley in the magoos...

They have waited this long to play Poole as they didn't want to throw him in the deep end earlier in the season; felt he might have been in over his head at League level

So they didn't think he would be able to keep his head above water in the deep end at League level, holden?

My understanding was that Powell was given the captaincy on the condition he played for two years. Parry is a necessary signing but I believe he feels his body is nearly stuffed in regards to league football, maybe six weeks off during pre-season to go skiing could entice him to continue.
Angus Poole definitely needs to be given a go at league level just to find out if he can play at that level, can find the ball in bundles.
Nick Joyce and Cameron Ellis-Yolmen are coming along nicely in the reserves and also in their limited league appearances, would hope they become league regulars next year.
