Rnd 18 - Glenelg v Central @ Gliderol Stadium (Sat 28/7)

by Big Phil
Both sides coming off disappointing losses with the Bays fading in the 2nd half to the Bloods and the Dogs being touched up by the Magpies. Central may make some wholesale changes with some players underperforming while the Tigers will no doubt keep giving their promising kids their opportunity to prove themselves.

Broadcast Details - ABC TV from 2:00pm

If the Bays lose this one, they are being chased by a pack of teams on 5 wins behind them and could be at risk of missing finals altogether. If they win, they are still a chance to get a top 3 spot. Bizarre.

Don't think the Bays can miss out? I think they are guaranteed 4th?

Not guaranteed fourth at all but I am pretty confident of making the five.

Only need to win two/six games to play finals given that North, South, Eagles and Port will all play each other again and take games off us. Not inconceivable that the fifth place team will be on 8 wins and eighth on seven wins by the end of the season given the closeness of teams 8th to 4th.

I'll have no problems if we do miss out though as it will mean we probably haven't been able to beat any of North, Port or South on the run home. Don't deserve to play finals then.

We could still finish bottom that's how much the standard of the comp has dropped with the additional AFL teams, bigger rookie lists and the money offered in country footy

So you might finish bottom but the causes are all external?

Norwood will probably finish top, Centrals second, despite how much the standard of the comp has dropped with the additional AFL teams, bigger rookie lists and the money offered in country footy. I'm not getting your argument.

Nah bro what I am saying is that between 4th (where we currently sit) and bottom is nothing because all the bottom 6 teams are even and can beat anyone between 4th and 9th on there day without too much surprise. I reckon the standard has dropped as 4th is just as good as bottom rather than bottom is just as good as 4th. Teams that have finished 4th and 5th in recent years, say between 2006 and 2010 have been a lot more stronger that this year. Just look at last year South played the bays in a final where both teams had a negative win loss ratio and were not true finals worthy teams. Even on the weekend at richmond oval it was 3rd first 4th on a dry still night and the standard of the match was terrible, West couldnt kick goal and we just couldnt kick full stop.

Norwood is lucky to be where it is in many respects - the factors above have hit them especially hard, with so many mature age players drafted in addition to 'junior' players in recent years. Just in mature players, Duigan, Puopolo, Shenton, Rowe, Lower all went interstate and Pfeiffer has played only 3 games for us since being drafted by the Power.

Another factor affecting the standard of the SANFL comp is the prohibitive transfer rules recently introduced, putting big prices on players who want to move between the WAFL, VFL and SANFL.

If you look at the competition including league, reserves and u/18s, and club performances rather than team performances, and add up the wins and draws for each club across the league, reserves and u/18s after round 17, the ladder looks like this:

Norwood 37.5 (13+12+12.5)
West 27 (9+8+10)
Sturt 25 (4+10+10 + 2 draws at u/18s)
Port 19.5 (5+8.5+6)
WWT 18.5 (5+4.5+9)

Central 18 (10+7+1)
Glenelg 18 (7+5+6)
North 18 (6+5.5+6.5)
South 9.5 (5+3.5+1)

Clearly there isn't much difference in clubs 4-8 on that "ladder" above, this year.

My guess is he meant losing 2 in a row twice in one year.
