Sojourner wrote:Not sure why it is, but North seem to play in a way that the players appear disinterested. One gets the feeling that they are capable of playing to a much higher standard, but rarely get into top gear on the field and take the game when its there. Irrespective of what the reasons are, the buck stops with Josh Francou and NAFC members are entitled to expect more from him than what they are currently getting on the field. Francou had plenty to say in the media prior to being given the job....

NA have a sniff after being a few goals down in this qtr
Boundary Ump throws the ball in
Does it poorly
Umpire makes him throw it back in again
This time it drops short of the ruckmen
The ball lands right into James Allan hands on the full
James Allan possesses the football
James Allan is tackled at the same instant from behind by Mieklejohn
No opportunity, and its holding derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ball
Stoopid rule this grabbing the ball from a throw in and getting pinged if an opponent tackles you within a half a second with as little needed as a fingernail
A multi talented footballer instinctively gets the ball, as his instincts would have him do, and gets pinged
QUESTION
The way the rule is set up,James Allan was rightly pinged for holding the ball
The question is what should James Allan do next time he is in the same situation ?

Law 15.2.3 (c) Except in the instance of a poor bounce or throw, a Player who takes possession of the football while contesting a
bounce or throw by a field Umpire or a boundary throw in, shall be regarded as having had prior opportunity. - the throw in where Allan was pinged was the second after the first was recalled as stated above, and the second also was a poor throw in. If he was the only one who could take control of the ball - wrong decision for HTB!

Would have made things interesting had they gaoled from that foray forward.

The umpire is supposed to call play on if it is a bad throw in before the ball arrives at the ruck contest and then the ball can be grabbed and it's not holding the ball. The ump didn't call play on so the HTB was correct. The umpire was wrong in not calling play on though.
