Twenty potential first-time State players headline the West End State Squad selected to play against Western Australia in the 2012 State Game at Gliderol Stadium next month.
Michael Godden will lead the State side as Head Coach. This year’s State selectors are Stephen Rowe (Chairman of Selectors), Peter Cavan, John Platten and Jarrod Cotton.
Training commences on Tuesday, May 1 at AAMI Stadium.
Chairman of Selectors Stephen Rowe said the group had chosen an initial squad that would be added and subtracted to based on form.
“There will be some disappointed players, no question. Anything up to another 15 players were unlucky not to be selected in the initial squad,” Rowe said.
“We have picked the squad to win on Gliderol Stadium. We have picked the squad with no fear or favour and no restrictions on selection, just the best balanced squad to win.
“The only other criteria was that the players had to be passionate about representing their state.”
Both the WAFL and the SANFL have the ability to select AFL rookie-listed players who have previously played in the State League competition.
ABC TV will telecast the State Game, which will be played on Saturday, May 26 at 2.10pm.
The final West End State Team will be selected on Wednesday, May 23.
The initial 2012 West End State Squad is as follows:
CDFC James Boyd

CDFC Paul Thomas
GFC Ty Allen
GFC Ruory Kirkby

Ben Nason , a good selection
Has improved since coming back from over the border

His foot passing skills are very good[Im sure Justin Westoff will agree]

Robert Shirley? What a joke! Ryan Williams from CDFC should be in ahead of him. Interesting to see Clint Alleway's golden pass continues. Never seen him doing anything but belt blokes behind the play. But then again being a glenelg fan I've never seen any north player do anything special for a long time.

Not sure 1st year recruits to SANFL clubs are eligible for selection hence why Batsanis, Milne and the like aren't named.

Disappointing Norwood don't have ten named as they have one of the biggest supporter bases.
Shirley a surprise.
Thommo's got in on past performances. Struggled this year thus far.

As an eagles supporter I have to say that the selection of Shirley is a complete joke and makes a mockery of the selection process. I would like to know what grounds they have picked him because I can't think of any.
A much more consistent performer for the Eagles would have have been Raymond but I don't think he would have actually made the team.
Someone mentioned the surprise of Alleway being picked. I don't watch many North games but when I do he always seems to play a great game.

Alleway had a poor game against Glenelg but otherwise his form has been good and given his previous state performances it is no surprise that he was picked.
Personally though I would have preferred younger players to be given an opportunity rather than players over 30 like Alleway and Shirley.

Allers should be an automatic selection.

originally from here, just returning. Not originally from interstate you need to wait for a year

The Bulldogs, diceman. Sorry, when I signed on I never filled out the profile part and havent bothered too since. I reckon most that post or read this forum would know this.
I'm a bit confused with what you might think I'm confused about champ.
