Quick Umpiring Question?

Postby whufc » Sun Apr 22, 2012 9:52 pm

Just having a chat with a mate and discussing why with 3 umpires they are constantly changing what part of the ground they umpire?

Is there a legitimate reason for swapping positions or is it pointless!

The middle umpire basically works the hardest (basically has the area between the two 50s) so they swap after each goal. Basically the umpire in teh forward 50 stays in his area and # 2 (middle umpire) and # 3 (the umpire in the defensive 50) swap. Also means the same umpire isn't umpiring the same players for the whole quarter.

So for two reasons 1, not to tire out the middle umpire and 2, rotate the umpires so they are not umpiring the same area of the ground.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Totally pointless, just makes them feel like they are doing something relevant and important and allows them to prance around like ballet dancers.
They should forget the theatrics and just watch the game, shut up and serve the game NOT themselves.

That was pretty much what we were saying thats why we thought there had to be a reasonable response.

AM Bays, is there a reason they dont want umpires doing the same area for a whole quarter.

yep two will do bugger all, one will work his arse off. The whole idea of the three umpire system was to reduce the amount of work two umpires had to do to keep up with the play. So rotating shares the load.

They also change sometimes when there is a ball up, throw up or free paid if the umpire who was in control in the middle has kept the play inside the forward 50.
