How'd they finish up in 1990?

Edit 7th. Ouch.

Well I thought we looked better than last week. However our forward structure seriously sucks at the moment. We probably had more of the ball than West tonight but we wasted it in our forward line. I was impressed with Marschall, Collier and Barmby. We desperately need some forwards though!!

Thought for 3/4 of the match we won more of the ball through the midfield and moved it reasonably well by hand but our entry into our forward line left a lot to be desired. When those up there did manage to get some space the mids had a lot of trouble putting it to where they wanted it. On the other side of the coin most of the guys playing forward had a lot of trouble making much of a contest. Westhoff seemed the only real forward we had, the other notable guys were backmen or midfielders "making do". When Westhoff got involved in contests we seemed able to make things work for ourselves but it was frightening when he wasn't there or the ball went to another option how easily it came out.

For the first time in a long time, playing an extra man in defense actually worked against the dogs. Bitterly disappointing because it's crap footy to be honest and now it's worked other coaches might try it. Fingers crossed whoever does try it next pays the price.

Thought Boyd was good in and under, Symes did his usual ball gathering and ball carrying stuff but burnt it a little as he does, Sansbury was lively up forward when he was there and easily the cleanest with it when his chances came. Hannath in ruck looked good, Barmby a welcome return and Collier looked solid. Plenty were down on skills and even Thommo seemed out of the game for far too long.

For West, they did well to keep Centrals under pressure long enough from 1/4 time to the last 10 minutes of the game to not concede a heap of goals because the ball seemed to be going down there a lot. Outside of that time they kicked enough goals to take the points. Didn't really note anyone in particular I thought played well for West (sorry, I'm not great at picking opposition players out since I don't really watch them much ;) )

Finally, I'm not one to whinge about umpires much and this isn't a serious general "they robbed us" whinge, but they made a rod for their backs paying a terrible one against West in West's forward lines. The guy WANTED to get the ball to the teammate waiting for it but in a good tackle the ball was pinned by the Centrals defender trying desperately to stop the handball. The Centrals fans were cheering the tackle and not one I heard even asked for holding the ball. Absolute shocker. From there we saw an avalanche of holding the balls when blokes would get tackled as soon as they picked it up and get pinged with no chance to dispose once tackled. Out of the perhaps 10 paid, 2 or 3 were there. Really ruins a game IMHO.

Well done to West on the win. They seemed to want it more than us.
Correct summary of the game up above by Gramaml, except that we really had no forwards. Westhoff, our only forward, had a shocker and I would be surprised if he took one mark for the match.
Barmby and Marschall were about the only players who performed consistently well for us, although Hardy, Sansbury, Collier, Boyd, Schiller and Symes played well in patches.

I reckon that we can definitely give a new nickname to Andy Collins: Noah. Never in the history of mankind has there been so much flooding. It is totally unattractive football. It is a shame that Collins reverts to this style of play as it shows no belief in his team to be able to attack. I am pretty sure West would have still won had they played attacking football. It is a pity that Andy was not prepared to show that belief in his team.

The job for Central now is to win enough games to be in touch of the top five when July comes around. Until we gain Obst and Hayes back, I cannot see any way we can kick winning scores. The only other alternative is perhaps, when Sutherland and Milne are fit enough to resume in the league, that we play Hannath up forward.

I truly do want to know what black cats Central have had cross their path - have never known a team to have as many injuries on a consistent basis as we have over the past two years. Do we need to do something about the way we train, or our fitness?? Between the league and reserves, it is something like 30 players who are either out injured, just resuming from injury or receiving treatment for injuries. I don't want to use it as an excuse though. The team that played tonight definitely did not seem to have the same hunger to win that West did and West fully deserved the two points.
Cheers
