Round 1 - Eagles vs Port (Thebarton Oval - Fri N 7:40pm)

An historic first game of the season under lights at Thebarton Oval. The Magpies have been impressive over the pre-season and look primed to catch the reigning premiers off guard on Friday night. Their fans will look forward to having a strong target up forward in Wilson and seeing if Jeremy Clayton can spark the Magpies into gear. The Eagles will be looking for 8 wins in a row against Port.

For those who have followed through pre-season - what are the likely team line-ups and who do you think will win?

Has it been confirmed yet as to whether it will still be Fri night?

I was under the impression there were still concerns as to whether the lights will be ready.

I was down at Thebarton this afternoon ... all four light towers are up, no construction items around them.

They LOOK ready

And as a side note its an amazing comparison between the new four single poles and the old six masive towers.

Obviously didnt see them switched on but here is hoping it's all set.

Something I assume will be confirmed in the next day or so.

have heard that the sanfl need to decide by Monday if the game goes ahead as there has been some problems with the light going up, if it doesnt go ahead, Richmond Oval might be used on Fri night as thebarton cant be used on Saturday as it is all booked out for saafl trials.

As far as I'm concerned it's still on Friday night as juniors training has been moved from Tuesday/Thurday to Monday/Wednesday because of the Friday night game.

That sounds positive at least. I think on a nice Fri night with Port as opposition it makes for a big opportunity to get a huge crowd to start the season.

At least a Bakers Dozen of us heading to the game. All the talk at Alberton last Saturday was the lights will be ready.

The saafl trials will be moved and the league game will be played on the saturday. My mail is that the lights are good to go

Sorry?

If the lights are "good to go", why wouldnt the league game be Fri night?

I was talking about the contingencies if the lights weren't ready. Just re read my initial post and it didn't make that much sense

If Thebby is ready this will be a great fixture with a big crowd.
Games at Thebby always have a traditional feel about them and with the reigning premiers coming up against an improving Port side who have good trial game form I can't see how this game will be a blow out.
Port in minor upset by a goal.

According to the SANFL injury report the Eagles only have Heinjus unavailable for this week (and Salter is 2 months out from the Power), so with that in mind, I'll have a crack at naming the opening team (and I've not seen any trials so probably way off).

F: Cicolella Grocke Hall
HF: Eddy Staple Knights
C: Toumpas Powell Jarrad
HB: McKenzie Day Raymond
B: Giuffreda Grieger Thompson
R: Parry Lewis Goldsworthy
I: Shirley Rowntree Bock

Outs from premiership side: Treeby, Allmond, Rimington, Tiller.

Rowntree has been out the last two weeks with an ankle / foot injury is he fit to play .
