Interested to know how successful this has been i.e how many players who play under this rule in the under 18 comp go on to stay in the system or is some clubs using it as purely a strategy to assist winning at the time?

I would imagine the slow developer usually a ruckman or tall forward would be the only type of player this is designed for.

Yes I agree this has been very successful and a great initiative.

Agreed, it is good for a slower developing player, or even a country lad who has just finished school and is moving to the city, who isnt quite ready to try and play senior footy at SANFL level.
No better example of this than Sturt using Mitch Curnow in the U18s last season and he is on the Powers list.

I would suggest no clubs use it for winning purposes, it would be more for development.

Being involved with the Eagles underage teams, I think that some clubs use the max number of 19 year olds in the U18s teams which is I believe is 6, to get an edge over other clubs who don't use as many 19 year olds. EG the Eagles played Port at Alberton one day and Port had 6 19 year olds to the Eagles who only had maybe 1 and the Eagles won by under a goal, any other day Port would have won by 10 goals with the same players on both sides.

Another example of this is Brodie Martin, late developer. If this wasnt in he could have been lost to playing country football instead of being on the Crows list.

Your post has confused me, your saying Port had 6 U19 players to the Eagles 1 U19 player, and the Eagles won, but any other day Port would have won by 10 goals?

I think Port would have used those overage players as they were new to the SANFL system and they were pushing for reserves selection. No teams would use overage players to gain an edge on other clubs. That grade is for development of players.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one confused, I agree with your post. I know some weeks Norwood have one and sometimes six. It has nothing to do with gettting an advantedge most if the time it depends on injuries, u18 state commitments and afl players which all effect the strengh of the reserves.

Pfft, Don't think it really mattered who Port picked in their 18s over the past 2-3 years they'd have beaten the Eagles regardless. Picking a few overage players who don't play regularly with the 18s probably gave the Eagles more of a chance winning the game.

Ash Fry at Centrals is one bloke who has benefited from the overage rule.

I dont mind it. The more blokes we can keep the SANFL/AFL dream alive for is a good thing isnt it.

Josh Wittwer is another one as well at Central...

Jordan Murdoch was as an overage player in Glenelg U18s early in 2011 season until given the opportunity to progress on to Reserves, then league.
He was an overage player in the 2011 State U18s as well.

Here's hoping he does well at Geelong
