A NIGHT SANFL grand final could be staged as early as next year.

Chief executive Leigh Whicker has described the break from tradition as a "no-brainer" while league powerbrokers have had preliminary discussions about making the SANFL's biggest game a prime-time event.

Just days after Collingwood president Eddie McGuire called on the AFL to shift its grand final to a night time slot, SANFL supremo Whicker said it is only a matter of time before the SANFL makes the move.

He floated the possibility of the league also staging a night preliminary final.

"For us to play our grand final at night, to me it is a no-brainer," Whicker said.

"I think it's certainly something we need to look at."

The only problem I can see is the late night esp. for young kids and if you add the after game party.

They should try a night prelim first to see how it goes...

Would be sensational but I'd probably wait till Adelaide Oval is in full swing.
AFL dont need a night GF as they can't get any more people to the game but the SANFL can and would.
Makes it simple, have first 2 weeks of finals Sat arvo as there's not usually an AFL game, have the Prelim the night before the AFL GF and have the SANFL GF on the following Friday or Saturday night.

I think it's worth trialling a night PF & GF at Footy Park before AO is up and running, get the format and any issues ironed out and then hit the AO with a really good night GF and hope to pack the place out. Would be a huge boost for the SANFL.
As an example, I probably wouldn't normally go to a GF if Sturt wasn't playing, Norwood v Centrals being an exception, but I reckon I'd definately go to the first one at AO, I think many others would also.

Been many grand finals at ao.

First one back at a redeveloped AO then.

Easy fixed, dont allow Central, Glenelg or Norwood to play in the Grand Final, problem solved!

The first time in years Whicker even acknowledges the SANFL competition and he says a 'night grand final is a no-brainer'. Personally I reckon promoting or even publically supporting the competition is the real no-brainer here but what would I know.

Come on Topsy, the SANFL does a great job at promoting the SANFL, for eg them programming Central, Glenelg, North, Norwood and Norwood all to have a bye to kick off the season, pure genius.

why would you bother with a night GF - so you can sell the TV rights to the US? FFS.

Adelaide oval will be years away.

sanfl is a 2.20pm start.

Something like that.

The Dog_ger is a traditionalist.

Lets keep sanfl tradition as long as we can....

PS. We need 10 teams in the sanfl.

The later a GF is scheduled, the less time will be available to the competing clubs to squeeze money out of the after-match functions. A no-brainer indeed.

Said it before: Have the Prelim final on a Friday night, have the GF on a Saturday arvo where it belongs.
