Taken from the Northern Territory News today, after NTFL selector and board member Darryl Window raised the idea again, as a result of the NT's Grand Final win on the weekend:

i think the sanfl would be way to easy. I think thunder would smash centrals every day of the week, and wouldn't be able to lose a game up here. Its just common sense to put them in there, we beat morningside by 100 points, in queensland, in a very strong comp (probably just a bit below SANFL). So look, in sargemland we will win the SANFL FLAG!!!!

I was initially against this but given the AFL intent to kill off the SANFL comp this move could actually save it and indeed garner some AFL reluctant support. The vital issue is sponsorship to provide the funds so it's no drain on the clubs, if this can be found let's have it.

1 - The AFL's plan to kill off the SANFL? I'll look forward to seeing what you base this upon.

2 - Sponsorship to fly a team, coaches, support staff to Darwin every other week? Good luck.

It's a big NO WAY from me.

I'd be cool with it if the NT team or football league or government pays for the flights & accommodation of the Adelaide teams going up there, and the NT team got a home attendance average of at least 2K

Why this desire for 10 teams which will just spread the existing sponsorship available for SANFL thinner?

Well Presently the AFL chip in some $$$ to fly them to Brisbane don't they??? I can't see the AFL (If they do?) continuing their part of the deal if the NT want to head South......

If something like this happens, it's for the long haul, not some Mickey mouse shit...I've seen too much change in other state league comps which take the shine off things.

If it happens, lock em in for 15 years and make sure costs are controlled and that shit won't hit the fan cost wise!

I'm sure the powers that be can fix that by getting more sponsors on board, ESP from the top end.

NT Thunder fly to Brisbane every other week. Bucket loads of money up North.

Would have no negative effect in sponsorship on the 9 Adelaide clubs. In fact, could be a plus.

Not if you're bringing in a new team from a new market like the NT. It should add sponsors to the competition.

If it is financially viable this would be a real positive option for the SANFL IMO. Better than AFL reserves sides or a Tassie or Port Melbourne side as has been touted in the past.

It would be fantastic if did happen. Thunder wouldn't have too much trouble recruiting players, with the employment opportunities in Darwin. They would struggle for a couple of years to win games down south, but would win their fair share in Darwin. 3 years and they would be playing finals.

18 round comp would be the go, with a couple of split rounds. Teams play each other home and away once a year.
