Just interested in the thoughts of others.

I've heard from several people that Massie was promised the role for next year after Mickan's sacking but it hasn't played out how they would have hoped and he has been very disappointing. He has shown that he doesn't have the experience or tech know how to be coaching at senior level.

Nothing really seems to have changed since Mickan was sacked though as their performances are very up and down but a couple of finals wins and he will be the bay messiah.

Glenelg have played some reasonable footy this season, put some more marquee style players into the mix, which I feel is the no 1 area that they are lacking in and it will likely turn around pretty quickly.

If it's true and the board gave him their word that he would get the role next year on that sunday before they sacked Mickan, I think he will get it, although I don't think he should. They have lost a proven career coach in Mickan and need to ensure they replace him with somebody who has a proven record in senior coaching. Don't think they should risk anyone less, although I can't imagine who is available atm so feel they will go with Massie.

Your comment on the Glenelg squad surprises me though. The Bays would have to have one of the best lists in the competition.

If Glenelg promised an unproven caretaker coach the senior job then they have much bigger issues than the senior coach. Obviously the squad isn't quite doing what was expected and change will have to happen before anything significantly changes. Massie might yet be the man to do that, but it's too hard to tell based on him coaching someone else's side with someone else's structures in place.

So much of Glenelg's issues in recent years have been performances in the finals so I think the jury is still out.

- If Glenelg lose the elimination final then he has had a poor finish and a wide net will be cast to see if there is anyone better out there.

- If Glenelg win a final but lose the 1st semi then its pretty line ball

- If Glenelg suddenly make a charge at get at least to the Prelim (would have to beat either Norwood or Eagles to do that)
then I think he is the front runner.

To be fair Kris has taken over someone elses list, and a senior playing group that were told to play to the previous coaches game plan. Takes a bit of time to teach old dogs new tricks, and we have had some injuries to these old dogs which has unsettled us a bit.

If we manage a win over Port and then have a decent crack against whoever in the 1st semi, i think he should get the job. if we win the semi then he's a lock for next season. He will cull the list and hopefully we can secure a spine player or 2, and with the younger blokes having another pre-season behind them 2012 can be approached with a fair amount of optimism.

Lets be fair here - apart from Centrals over the past 10 years - every SANFL Club has an extremely poor finals record during this same time. The Eagles made heaps of finals series and won 1 flag and Sturt 1 the other flag way back in 2002.

Massies record is 1 U18 flag and guided the Ressies to an unbeaten start before embarking on the seniors job. Godds coached 2 Ressies flags when the depth was incredible - not sure how you can even measure or benchmark different coaches - How many SANFL Coaches at the moment have won a League Premiership .........2 out of 9!!!!

Give him some time - he has guided the bays into the 2011 Finals and are the 4th team to make it ...still waiting on the other finalist. If change of coach didn't occur, Glenelg may not even have made the finals and would certainly have not played any more kids ...how many first yr players and second yr players have played league footy this year - answer ...over 16. That is about development of the playing list

Aren't organisations legally obliged to advertise vacant positions? I know in the company I work for, even if a job has already been given to someone internally, they are still legally required to go through the advertisment/interview process.

Okay so checked with my HR buddy and it's not a legal requirement but it is to protect us from any legal action should any allegations of unlawful discrimination occur. Applicants who don't hear about a vacancy until it is too late to apply for it because candidates have been sought through an informal recruitment exercise may be able to claim discrimination on the basis that the recruitment method was a discriminatory arrangement.
