If a player is reported, is there an automatic 50 metre penalty imposed?

Should have at least been a 25. The Norwood guy marked it and Hartlett was well and truly late with his so called attempted spoil.

No automatic fifty for a report. Surprising one was not paid here though, it seemed like the umpire reported him for making late & high contact on the spoil. That should be fifty even if no report is laid.

I can't believe how many people think this is the case. You cannot receive a free kick and a 50m for the same thing. If you get a free kick and the player is reported it is the same incident you get a free kick and no 50m. If they take a mark and the player is reported for charging etc for hitting them after the mark has been taken then a 50m can be paid because the mark is paid the report is for a difference incident.

There was a time when this was the rule - report = 50m penalty plus a free kick. That's where confusion comes from.

Correct. When was this rule changed?

It was defintely a rule in 2000. I remember a Sturt player, maybe Whiteman, being reported for striking Mark Jeffries !!!!!!! almost on the wing in the last quarter of a game early in the year at Unley and Jeffries being marched right to the goal square to goal and virtually sew up the game for North.

In 2001 at prospect in about Round 7, a South player, maybe trevor Rigney was reported for striking a North player, I think his name was Broad, about 45 metres from goal and I was expecting the same march to the goalsquare, it didn't happen and Broad missed the goal. I was rather irate at the time and especially later in the day when North gave up about a 4 goal lead in the last quarterto lose by a couple of points.
