Mead and Port part ways

Postby bloods08 » Sat Aug 13, 2011 6:02 pm

Interesting to see that Neil Cross announced at the end of the ABC coverage that Darren Mead and Port have parted ways. Disappointing if the case.

Didn't think to look in there. Probably deserves its own thread anyway.

I thought the development of the 18's & Reserves goes along way to the depth perceived at a football club.
Look at Port's 18's & Reserves, both are top which goes to show they are ahead of all other clubs bar their A grades as far as youth and depth are concerned at present, a good sign for the club for the years ahead.
Yes Port have been struggling in the League for a while now but i must say i've been happy with Bamfords progress as coach of this young side but for Bamford to go out & sack 6-7 players from your reserves-u/18s is a disgrace at this time of the year, what the hell is he thinking?
Mead apparently questioned Bamfords reasoning for this & was told these blokes ain't A grade material & it ain't about winning 18/s & Reserves premierships its about League Premierships.
Its ok to think your A's wont ( coz they aint good enough ) play finals this year but to take away the chance or opportunity from these young up & coming kids tasting premiership success is disgraceful, a premiership, doesn't matter what grade it is is a huge confidence booster for the youngsters of tomorrow & it helps big time in the growth & development of these lads.
I wonder whether Bamford was happy with the result of the 18s today, getting beaten by 48pts?
I also wonder whether Bamford has been worried about Meads success as B grade coach at Port, a premiership in 2010 & sitting top in 2011.
With a decision like this made at this time of the year, it makes you think the real reasons behind it is more personnal than club orientated.
Not happy Jan!

Centrals sack seconds players all the time. There is no point in keeping them if they are not likely to become good league players.

Just out of curiosity NM, who were the fringe players told they were no longer required?

Also, who will take over from Mead for the remainder of the season?

All clubs do however I would think that it would be a decision made by all the Senior Coachs and agreed where as from what NM has stated the decision clearly was not mutual at the Magpies?

Mate i'm hearing you but you don't go cleaning out your cupboard 4 weeks from finals & if your B's & 18's are top you must have some good depth.

Never seen a player who was a good seconds player but not every going to play league? Sounds more like Mead was putting the short term success of those sides ahead of developing league players. Interesting comment that it should be a mutual decision though. What if Bamford and Mead disagree? Do nothing because two blokes can't agree? Bamford is the senior coach, there to do a job for the club. Mead is likewise there to do the best thing for the club, not his personal coaching record.

Centrals could have risked a couple league flags for a bunch of reserves flags over the last 7-8 years but we've moved away from that idea. Now we're finding instead of being in trouble when we lose key players we have guys who have done the same role in reserves for a while, perhaps many before they were able to earn that reserves spot, come up and do a great job.

So bring back Mead I say! Let Port aim for u18 and reserve flags a while longer yet.

Going by NM's comments it seems strange. Surely you can sort it out at the end of the season, but with only a few rounds to go? What could possibly be the benefit?

I agree with Bamfords thinking as its all about the League sides development, although the action taken with the U'18s is slightly puzzling.

bayman, one day you will realise that virtually NO ONE gives a rats toss bag about the results in the Seconds except the players involved

So for 18 rounds, these players were good enough to be at Port, but 4 weeks before finals, all of a sudden they aren't. Very strange move. Who says you can't develop players, and have success?

Judging by Mead's reaction, obviously their Coach does too. ;)

Seems strange to me to make this decision 4 weeks out from finals though.
After all, they still have to put 21 players on the field each week for the remainder of the season in both grades.

No matter what some supporters from the outer think about 18s & Reserves premierships, every player / team takes the field wanting to win the flag in their comp.
The guys who play Reserves and U18s have trained and made sacrifices over the past 10 months hoping to win a Premiership in their grade, and from their results so far, would be looking forward to finals.
If they lose a game it is as shattering to them, as a League loss is for the general club supporter.
