Mount Barker?

Postby CENTURION » Wed Jul 20, 2011 10:40 am

This is really becoming of great interest to me. Mount Barker is growing at quite a rapid rate of knots & there are approximately 7,000 new homes proposed for the immediate area & out to Wistow in the next 10 to 15 years. The government is starting to prepare for this expansion, as there is a $247 million sewerage plant to be built in the area in the near future. In time, gas will follow, as well as the train. My question is, if Sturt don't go out there, who will the SANFL "allocate" this area too? Another current club, or possibly a new one!

I always thought gas came before sewerage.

Sturt are already 'allocated' Mt Barker are they not??

If you want Sturt to move then why not shift Centrals to Munno Para West while you are at it

I reckon a new side should go there. Hills Hawks or something like that. Eliminate the bye.
One of the 2 main areas for massive growth in next 20 years, the other being Gawler area. A new oval with a rail link up to Mt Barker would be fantastic. The locals would get right behind a club up there and within a few years would have massive support. If i was on SANFL board id be looking at this immediately, too good of an opportunity to miss

You make a good point in that its not just Mt Barker that is expanding rapidly, it goes all the way out to the back blocks of Mt Barker and through to Wistow. Its not unreasonable to suggest that the SANFL represent all areas equally in terms of local participation.

The local developers are actually paying for the second interchange to be built on the Freeway and its been brought up that they would like to move the current Mt Barker Oval and do a land swap for development and build a decent ground at the same time. Hence if the SANFL were to be involved as well as the State Government its likely a good deal would be reached without to many problems.

Sturt should be given the first opportunity to put it to their members and see if they want to relocate there. Blind Freddy can tell you that vote wont get up in a million years due to traditions being unable to be broken and so on.

Next it should pass to the local clubs to see if they want to form the same model that the Central Districts Football Association used to form the CDFC between them and set up a local side run by local people from the local sides across the hills and even Blackwood to make it work.

Think they would be likely to be fairly successfull with a good base of talent to work with and home ground advantage as they move forward.

Adelaide Hills Council have already bought the land for a new oval. I wonder if a new team will play there or the Mt Barker FC will just relocate?

Cornerstone College Old Scholars are already in the process of fielding a senior team for next season.

People who would follow the SANFL already have a team so not sure if a new team would be successful memberhip wise. How many fans do Peel Thunder have in WA?

They said that about Centrals when they entered. Think the locals would support a local side and its more about the next generations. With all the young families and kids living and going to school up there the aim would be for a fair whack of them to get onboard

You're right, Sturt is allocated to Mt Barker. But, as with all population shifts, the SANFL will rezone and parts of Sturt's recruiting zone will be shuffled off to other clubs to balance it out.
The same will happen out north, once the new developments happen out that way.

Disagree. Centrals entered when the SANFL was the premier comp thats accessible. Post Crows and Power entering the comp is a different story. Thats why I asked how many fans Peel Thunder have.
