A somewhat tighter than expected game. For 3 quarters, Westies matched Centrals, with Centrals second quarter and Westies shocking kicking at goal the difference at the end.

A lot of great marking by Centrals today, with Spurr's mark the best I've seen in the SANFL in a long time! A couple of others would have been mark of the day contenders if not for Spurr's classic in the second quarter.

Dogs just kept West under control from the 20 minute mark onwards and strolled to another fairly easy win. Some kids played well, Gunston played a ripper, Spurr took a massive hanger and we roll onwards to next week.

But West were massively disappointing. A game they needed to win far more than Centrals did with Centrals severely depleted by injury and apart from an early burst never looked likely. Once the dogs kicked a couple as time on in the first neared and pegged back the early 2 goal break I don't think anyone bar wishful West fans and paranoid Centrals fans thought there was going to be an upset today. We lose Obst, worry all week who might kick goals and get 10.2 from our 2 key forwards. Apparently this Ferguson bloke is the best key defender in the comp, but West's key defenders got a bath today.

I liked Haydon's game today. His best, while Gunston in the last 2 weeks has done well playing at CHB on Cockshell one week then CHF the next. Can't help but feel he's starting to get the hang of this game. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the Crows called him up with a view to letting him play out the year there.

Finally, what a spectacular mark by Spurr. His marking is massively underrated by opposition fans, but I suspect no longer. Very reminiscent of Shaun Smith around 1996 over Gary Lyon.

Reasonable game to watch from a neutral perspective, reasonably well umpired.
To me, the difference seemed to be belief. West had the better of most of the first term, but Centrals stayed in the game to level it up at 1/4 time. Then from about half way through the third, West had far more of the game, but couldn't put it on the board, and then Centrals would go forward once and kick a steadier. How much would they give to have Bennett back there?
If West can find some belief, I reckon there were signs they could still challenge the top two.
We all know Centrals have inuries, how many blokes were Westies missing who are likely to return?
Spurr's mark was fantastic, and Sutherland's in the first 1/4 was a great classical high mark.

Another good win. Just doing what we have to each week to get the points. Really happy with where we are at the moment considering all the injuries.

Chad, Eddie and Jack got the awards at the club tonight. Jack also got BOG last week. Great to see an AFL player come back and put in and look like he wants to be there.

I don't think there were any injuries today, so lets hope we can finally have 2 games in a row with some stability in the lineup.

While Spurs mark was a ripper, I think Kirkwood's mark against west @ Alberton was better...

Obviously a fantastic mark, but given all the posts I'd read about it, I was expecting something a little more remarkable.

Few would have tipped Westies to win at Elizabeth, so the result is hardly an unexpected one. West's lack of depth to place pressure on players to keep their spot on the league list should be sounding alarm bells at the club though.

Agree, knees didn't get above shoulder height. I think the awkward fall made it look better than it was.

Westies performance at Elizabeth Oval today was a significant improvement on what we have seen over the past month. While they were beaten by 26pts and were clearly the second best team in the contest they had more scoring shots than the top team and pretty much matched them in possessions. One particularly important stat was marks inside 50 where we had 16 to Centrals 18, a vast improvement on earlier efforts. Of course Centrals took greater advantage in that they had 2 fwds that booted 5 gls each including Havelberg who only had 5 kicks!

Bonney came in for his first game, young Nick Homburg came up from the 2s with Bornholm and Green dropping out of the named side. Webb started in ruck with Willets on the bench.

The Bloods started well and lead for much of the Q through positive forward entries, good use of the wide open space and winning the centre breaks. 1Q WA 4.2, CD 4.2.

The second was where Centrals won the game as they surged to a 29pt margin at half time, one that they pretty much maintained for the whole game. Westies could only manage 3 pathetic pts in 25 minutes of footy as they allowed themselves to be intimidated by Centrals pressure and superior skill. They did miss a couple of easy shots for goal that were plain embarrassing. Half time WA 4.5, CD 9.4.

Lead by a rejuvenated Aaron Fielke Westies hit back in the third to play some pretty good footy interspersed by some dreadful mistakes. At one point Centrals kicked out and the ball cleared the waiting pack and bounced to Scott Blesing alone on the outer wing. Blesing fell over, the ball bounced over his head was gathered by Centrals who goaled from the blunder. Westies got plenty of the ball but regularly turned it over to grateful Centrals players who make you pay for your mistakes. We outscored Centrals this Q, 3.5 to 3.1 but again let ourselves down by some bad kicking for goal from set shots. Fielke kicked 2 this Q with Chris Bonney getting his first at senior level. 3Q time WA 8.10, CD 12.5.

The last was a formality. We kicked 3 but Centrals maintained control kicking 5. It was getting cold and a lot of interest had gone from the game. Final score WA 11.15, CD 17.5. Centrals kicked an amazing 8.1 in the last half to Westies 7.10.

Once again Stevie Morris was our best. Shane Birss was his usual creative self starting many attacks with his skilful use of the ball. Willets won the ruck. Davenport and Fielke played their best games for some time. Chris Bonney and Nick Homburg did well enough to be retained next week when we’re home to the Eagles. Logan Hill and Caire did some useful stuff. Fisher, Beech and Fielke kicked 2 gls each but we need more from our forwards (Understatement of the season!) .We won the centre breaks 17 to 14 and had 15 more handballs but made twice as many mistakes.

A crucial game next week against the Eagles, who with Port, South and the Bays are contesting the remaining 3 spots in the 5. South play Norwood twice and have a bye in the last 7 rounds. The Bays don’t have either Norwood or Centrals but do have a bye. Port don’t have a bye but play both the top teams in their run home.

I agree with your observations blackandred. "Interestingly" though in many of our matches (the Eagles game for one) I've noticed if you were to just look at the stats you'd think Central's would have lost. From memory, could easily be wrong, even when we beat the Bays at the Bay by over 60 points we had less inside fifty's. Touch wood, straight kicking has been a feature in many of our games this year. Again, from my poor memory, I believe Havelberg has been kicking at an accuracy rate better than any forward in the AFL or SANFL.
This year, has been amazing so far, each week I respect the player's more and more. They've made no excuses just keep driving for success. A very good win today. Westies kicking from set shots, on what was a pretty "still" day, was awful. It's a pretty even comp this year.

Well done Centrals. Reckon the second 1/4 cost us also our kicking for goal. Didnt notice the Umps today.

Agreed - surprising considering we copped both Williams and Dey (what did Centrals and West do to deserve this).
