Fox commentary team were just talking about the SA AFL Clubs having reserves teams in the SANFL during the commentary of the West Coast vs Port game.
Dwayne Russell came out with the claim that its being reported by Port Power that when Power team mates have been opposed to each other they have been 'looking after' each other.
What do you make of this claim?
Has anyone seen this occur?
Imho WHAT A JOKE!

well you would expect AFL team-mates in a reserves team wouldnt go as hard at each other as they should.
so give the power/crows reserves teams in the vfl

basically the whole conversation regarding that had no respect for the wafl, vfl or sanfl, i can't believe dwayne russell agreeing given his background, but i will say this a few years ago at norwood david pittman could've 'killed' chris mcdermott & chose not to

So logically the afl players welfare is better off if the status quo is maintained. As at least not all their opposition is trying to "clean them up".

He (Russell) also made mention that David Rodan kicked 6 goals for Norwood's reserves team, although in his defence, he said he read that on the Power website?
He did correct himself on air after someone had sent info in that Rodan's performance was in fact in the league team.

Happened to watch that part the game. It almost sounded like their conversation about the issue was planned.

Heard the very same commentary, think its a very concerning allegation and I do think the SANFL should make an investigation into it, clearly they have the footage to look at as all games are filmed for coaching purposes.
If its proven to be the case, the players concerned should be relegated to the SANFL Reserves on a permanent basis when dropped from the AFL.
Have no doubt however that the "commentary" was pre planned prior to the game, or the mention of it anyway. It wont help their cause, if anything it will more than likely do it further damage.

I can recall at some point in the '97 Grand Final a contest between a Norwood and Port player happened in front of my vantage point (somewhere on the outer side, a little way down from the wing - about the same spot where Tregenza got knocked out cold). One of the players won the ball and cleared it. As the players separated, the Redleg gave his Magpie opponent a little pat on the bum. The two were teammates for one of the AFL clubs. No I don't remember which players, or indeed which AFL club (thinking PAP but not sure), but it did make an impression on me at the time. AFL teammates were looking out for each other back then - though I don't believe either was putting in less at the contest.

Thats it, if it is found true it almost then fits into the same family as match fixing or spot fixing as they call it now!

I promptly stuck a HANDS OFF OUR SANFL sticker on the TV when they started the conversation. Thank God they're made with cheap paper and peel off easily.
Maybe the AFL are directing what commentators should talk about or more to the point what they are NOT allowed to talk about. Of course they wouldn't do that or would they?? That's all I can say about that without getting myself in trouble.

I dont believe its happening, in the heat of the moment when the ball is there to be won do you think any player would seriously look up and think shit he is my mate at AFL dont go in hard or tackle him. The AFL clubs might ask this but surely the players have some integrity in them.
I did see a good moment on tv last week when Hawthorn played Fremantle, Nick Lower gave ex team mate Paul Puopolo a pat on the back after a hard fought piece of play.
Edited for accuracy

He must have done well then, to play for Carlton against Brisbane as well.

Sorry mate it was Puopolo, see what happens when so many Norwood guys get taken in one hit.

Top post Phil, Mic and Co.
I was sceaming in fury about that comentary .... it was like a scipt that the commentaors had to read.
The AFL can see their girls game is in trouble in SA and that more and more prefer to watch real football played by men with full contact like our fathers and grandfathers played.
Add the attendance of the 4 SANFL games here and it equals or betters the attendance of Port Power and represents a 3rd football entity here and an option to AFL.
SANFL supporters have a passion for their clubs born of a life time unlike the fair weather supporters of AFL.

Yes they did lose a few of them, and they are all doing OK too.

Anyone see Andrew Moore's effort yesterday for North against Port - he was looking after anyone wearing a Port Adelaide jumper - regardless of the fact we were playing the Magpies...hang on he is shit against any opposition North play so there goes that theory!

Probably talk for another thread but how many average SANFL players is there that are currently on AFL lists getting games with the Crows and Port, that is why these two teams suck at the moment.
Cameron Hitchcock
Jesper Pittard
Andrew Moore
James Sellar
Myke Cook
Matty Westoff
etc etc the list goes on!

some very interesting claims being made here i reckon.
1.its human nature that the afl teamates would look after each other...unless they were fighting for the same position in their afl side, then it may be a different story.
2. i refuse to believe that a home grown port player would not go in hard against a home grown norwood player surely, even if they play for the same afl team...interstate blokes maybe thats a yes.
3. i think that the dwayne russell comment would have been scripted, its how andy d rolls i'm sure.
all 3 of these views are highly disturbing in my view,so now we know what we are up against.

So let's hear Neil Craig's opinion on reserves teams... *sound of crickets*.
