I think we are lucky Sturt were inaccurate today which gave us our chance to kick away in the final term. Good win by the Magpies.

This is how I saw the match...

1st QTR
Sturt showed great determination, but once again broke down from half forward onwards, meanwhile Port showed very little in my opinion and were certainly the worse of the two sides, so the 3 goal lead to Sturt was about right.

2nd QTR
Much the same as the first term, except that Port had a really good burst for about 5-7 minutes half way through, where they suddenly clicked and put 3 goals on the board. Sturt kicked 0.7 in the 15 minutes either side of that burst. In some ways Sturt were lucky to be in touch, as they could have collapsed, but likewise Sturt could have and should have put Port away considering how many shots they were having on goal in comparison.

3rd QTR
Port had one chance in the first minute and one chance in the last minute and goaled, Sturt once again had most of the play inbetween but scored nearly nothing, so just such a poor return for so much play. So once again very frustrating, was amazing to think that over that whole quarter it was just 1.2 from Sturt. Norman obviously failed to make any changes to spark them up forward, while Port I think were just keeping the status quo hoping they'd outlast Sturt.

4th QTR
Just didn't have the stomach to keep pressing for no reward. Port once again bolted out and got an early goal, then another and at that point I think Sturt gave up and it was raining goals. So in the end, Port did outlast us and won well.

If it sounds like I'm saying Sturt dominated the game, they did without looking like they were dominating, they certainly seemed to have the ball most of the time. The stats say otherwise, but Port just didn't seem to do much for 3 quarters. Having just 7-8 shots at goal over 3 quarters backs that up I think, whereas Sturt had 18 shots or so in that time. For me Sturt showed good determination for most of the match, but just cannot score... as per my preseason predictions, Sturt are a good chance for the wooden spoon, which I think will be a tragedy for the club. As for Port, overall, I thought they were pretty poor. They beat us convincingly in the end, which they can be happy with, but geez, look where we are. Both sides deserve to be in the bottom 3.

Hope not! I don't care too much for Sturt's VFL team. ;)

For a good part of the game Port couldn't hold the simplest of marks and we couldn't buy a goal from the most promising forays forward. We are great at finding ways to get thumped. Well done to the Magpies.

On a side note, the one club thing doesn't seem to have worked as I heard numerous Magpie supporters complaining about the prices and "the principle".
These curtain raisers are a huge flop.

Yeah they havent worked, despite what I think were decent intentions. There was probably 1000 there at the start of the game and it would have grown to 2250 or so by the end of the 2nd quarter.

Good game of footy though. Definitely one that got away from Sturt. They should have been up by 4-5 goals at half time at least but really didnt make the most of their chances going against the scoring end. Port did well to hold Sturt in the the third then went bananas in the last.

Defence was fantastic...Lokan especially had a ripper. Dolling was great, as was Summo. Hoskins 65 metre torp was insane. Good game of footy and I think its the first magpies win ive been to in three years.

So frustrating, so much play, more scoring shots but I don't think we looked good a tall, port had the droppsies a bit which helped and we got a good run fro the umps, can't complain, they put the whistle away which was good.

Bad kicking is bad football and port put us away in the 4 th, jutr frustrating.

Gonna be tough to get off the bottom.

Joe Anderson was brilliant. A few youngsters did ok in Stephen and bartlett and sheedy was good. Wundke tried hard. Tambling and Martin were hopeless and can't see them getting demoted to the crows anytime soon.

Apart from the result, and the dreadful overall quality of the skills on show, I actually enjoyed the novelty of watching an SANFL home and away game at Headquarters. Thought the crowd and atmos was better than some have suggested here. It didn't cost me anything extra and it was enjoyable sitting in the members stand. It was a hoot watching the Pooer 'One Club' faithful lay down their rugs to reserve rows of seats in a near empty grandstand before buggering off to presumably drink and gamble elsewhere

That quote is good signature fodder. You almost edged Jean-Paul Sartre out of mine.

Surely Digger taking a speccy is an even better candidate ;)

Eh, not much chop either, trying too much afl type things, taking players on, running in circles etc...

Also, can't agree about the atmosphere, hate going to aami stadium, no feeling in the crowd...suburban grounds all the way.

Yeah. I think it had good intentions and the club was hopeful that you'd get 3-4000 there for the start of the magpies, but really its just been like a normal SANFL crowd. I guess only the real diehards are keen to sit at the footy for over 6 hours.

Surely the club would be better off having 4-5000 at Alberton as opposed to 1000 at AAMI.
