From his
speech to the National Press Club yesterday:
Emmanuel Irra, a 17 year-old Ugandan now playing for Woodville in South Australia.
I'm pretty sure that was a South Adelaide guernsey I saw him running around in against Centrals the other day.

Other than that, it's actually not a bad speech.

He also mentioned Tasmania having a great history of playing AFL...that insidious substitution of AFL for Australian Rules. These people need to be picked up on it.

Also annoys me that nowadays you haven't played "League Football" unless you have played for an AFL club...

This not new.
When I was in the army, many years ago, those from NSW & QLD called Australian Rules, VFL.
I hated it then & hate it now, but what can you do?
The AFL like it that way. It gives them even more exposure & the rest of the nation can suck eggs.

Yeah it's pretty annoying, but there's not much you can do when there's ex players and coaches in the media who now mostly use "playing AFL" instead of football or something else more appropriate.
It's a brand name and you can bet the practice will continue.

I had the same problem in the ACT in 99/2000. People would quiz me about playing AFL and I said, "I don't, I play Aussie Rules".

Whilst annoying it is no different to majority of Aussie Rules lovers who ask people about playing NRL or NFL as a sport instead of Rugby League or Gridiron. I would dare say a large percentage of us do it.

You might find that if you refer to Gridiron when speaking to an American, they may not know what you mean!
One I worked with a few years ago was a bit puzzled by the term.
I guess most of them only see it as "football" and couldn't care less what the rest of the world calls it.

I don't.
It's Aussie Rules, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Basketball, Soccer and Girdiron to me and all I deal with.
What is wrong with using those terms.
I played footy at Gepps Cross but I don't go around saying I played AFL.
NRL is not a sport - it is the name of a national sporting organisation - National Rugby League. You don't play National Rugby League

Not in my experience - I don't think I've ever heard "NFL" or "NRL" ever used in the same all encompassing manner except when referring to those particular competitions - certainly not to the same notorious extent as Australian Rules football.
FWIW, I have been reasonably conscious of listening out for this type of substitution, and have always used the term "rugby league", mostly "American Football" or occasionally "gridiron" for that code.

One of my pet peeves too, even if it makes me sound a little petty to others.

Wayne Jackson started it when he was CEO. Everything was branded AFL. It's easier on the tongue than saying Australian Rules Football, but does annoy me a bit as well. One of those "marketing decisions".

A sports forum probably isn't the best place to be asking people about the
Incorrect terms they name different sports. In my experience a lot of people plump for the league name when discussing some sports, usually those sports where there is only one dominant league

Cripes. I wish I had so little to worry about that things like that got up my nose.

Demetriou stuffs something like this up and it earns a new thread?
Seriously, of all the things he has messed around with in our national league and this is a focus?

Football has become a generic term for at least 3 different sports so it's the same over here...soccer is 'football' aways has been always will be. I think I'm about the only one who calls it 'soccer' and that's only because of some extremely confusing conversations with friends when I talk about 'footy' and they assume soccer. As far as I know Gridiron is usually referred to a American Football here...at least by everyone I know who follows it.
Really don't see the point of trying to call a sport by the abreviation of a league or competition it's played in though. People don't 'play' NRL they play rugby in the NRL.

JAS

Im the same as ML.
We play football, footy or aussie rules.
There's Rugby or Rugby Union.
There's League or Rugby League.
There's gridiron.
There's soccer.
There's tennis.
There's ping pong.
Its all straight forward IMHO.
