i was watching footy classified on monday night & craig hutchison 'suggested' with the spate of injuries some afl clubs are having, they should be allowed to call on any player australia wide to bring them onto their list mid season.......this happened to centrals in the mid 1990's with tony lynn & it may have cost them a flag & now it rears its ugly head again..............i am dead against this as while it would give a player a chance, second chance etc i think it devalues every ''state league competition'' in the land & gives those state league clubs no chance to 'recruit' a similar type of player
while we're talking about his comments, is it me or is he a dichkead ? i think he is patronising to 'caro' & saying on tv people are liars is uncalled for

I'd prefer that to the rookie list.

Yes, it's either increased playing lists (rookie lists) or mid-season departures. What's worse? A chance of losing them mid-season or a definite loss for the whole season with a chance they won't play AFL at all.
Can SANFL clubs "raid" any other competitions in this same way mid-season?

IMO Rookies are overworked and underpaid compared to everyone else on an AFL list.

From what I have heard Heater you are right.
They should be made just like any other player on the list as they seem to do the same amount of work.
I bet the AFLPA will be onto that issue soon, if they aren't already.

So you disagreed with Centrals picking up Sutherland from Berri last year?

Sutherland was allowed to return to Berri for the finals. Tony Lynne was not.

This bloke is a first class tool!!!!!!!!!
Several years ago Kevin Sheedy invited him to Windy Hill and introduced him to all the players.
He then told all the players to never talk to him as he is a complete Dickhead or words to that effect and is not to be trusted. Put the little F*ckwit in his place

Hutchy is a bottom feeder who loves nothing more than ruining people's lives by harassing them and making accusations he can't prove before hiding behing the old journo copouts of not wanting to reveal sources, but standing by them. Refuses to answer direct questions and gets upset when people persist yet makes up the answers when he does the same.
However, in this instance, he is correct. It would have to be managed correctly, it wouldn't be ideal for the SANFL, WAFL or VFL player's club but the concern of the AFL has to be it's own competition. Centrals took Sutherland knowing it wasn't ideal for Berri, and while we came to an agreement that in the end saw all parties get what they wanted all along, it was the bigger competition doing what it had to do in order to look after itself. It's not ideal for the AFL to have clubs with massive weaknesses that can be filled with a state league player, it's also not ideal for the players who might miss their chance to play AFL.

What, a list of 46-odd players isn't big enough for them?

Sutherland was allowed to play for Centrals, not the other way around.

Hutchy is a peanut. I thought it was great when he tried to ruffle Jeff Kennett's feathers on the footy show and it backfired on him big time. Hutchy was about to start crying like a sooky little school kid at one stage. It turned out that Hutchy's story was tripe and Kennett and Clarkson had come to a mutual agreement to hold off negotiations and Hutchy was wrong the whole way along. I can't stand him.

Hehe True, but you have to admit Centrals treated your club better that SANFL clubs are trated by the AFL.

Yes, they did treat us very well, as did we to Centrals.

If the rookie list was gone and the call up system introduced, at least you'd have a situation where the player can stay with his home club. As it is, there's a possibility that a young bloke can be uprooted from home and only ever play in another state league.
Take Benet Copping for example, never got any kind of shot at playing for Freo and just spent 3 seasons at East Perth. I think the only advantage is that they get to do some kind of preseason with an AFL club, but the SANFL and WAFL players do put in a fair bit of work as is.

What a great idea.
Football has tiers, AFL is the top tier, and state leagues are second etc, and if a team needs to stock up mid season, why wouldnt you want to get the best players from the next best comp. Im sure they would come up with some generous compensation for this.

i somewhat agree with the concept. although in saying that i also agree with a post earlier that the list is 45or so these days?? there should plenty of options for clubs too call on. if blokes arent playing well in the SANFL etc stiff!, you drafted these blokes play them.
in saying that though they could run with a Disabled list like they do in the NFL where if someone is injured for the season they could call up a player off their list too fill the hole assuming there is no one on the rookie list worthy (again a contensious point)
there are plenty of holes in it but with the everlooming free agency (imo its already here in a way) and the massive TV deal just done the rookies/sub list could be better compensated IF it were to happen.
