MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The AFL wishes to advise the opening match in round one of the 2011 Foxtel Cup, between Queensland’s Morningside and the NT Thunder, will be re-scheduled to AAMI Stadium this Saturday, March 26, as a curtain-raiser to the Adelaide Crows v Hawthorn match.

The game will commence at 3.05pm local time, with a broadcast that afternoon on Fox Sports.

This match is the opening game in the new competition which brings together 16 teams from the various state leagues across the country to play in a knockout format - Swan Districts (WA), Claremont (WA), East Perth (WA), North Ballarat (Vic), Northern Bullants (Vic), Williamstown (Vic), West Adelaide (SA), North Adelaide (SA), Port Adelaide Magpies (SA), Morningside (Qld), Labrador (Qld), NT Thunder (NT), Clarence (Tasmania), Ainslie (ACT), the East Coast Eagles (NSW) and the Greater Western Sydney Giants, who will participate in 2011 only before their entry to the AFL competition in 2012.

The game was re-scheduled from the Gabba to AAMI Stadium, to allow the ground to have maximum time to be prepared for the changeover to the AFL season from cricket, and the opening match of the season for the Brisbane Lions against Fremantle.

AAMI Stadium is well-placed to host a curtain-raiser match and the NT Thunder side will feature champion Adelaide Crows’ player Andrew McLeod in its playing ranks, as the Crows celebrate the 20-year milestone of the club’s first match in the AFL competition in 1991.

The Foxtel Cup was designed to spread the load for the clubs during the course of their stage league seasons, and will be run as follows:

Round One:

Eight round one knockout matches to be played in the period between March 26-May 21. Each match to be played on a Saturday afternoon, with seven of the games to played as curtain-raisers to an AFL match, and one match as a stand-alone match at a state-league venue.

Round Two:

Four round two knockout matches to be played in the period between May 28-June 18. One game would be played per week on a Saturday afternoon, with the aim to play each match as a curtain-raiser to an AFL match or as a stand-alone match at a state-league venue.

Round Three:

Two knockout semi-final matches to be played over the weekends of July 9 and July 16. One game would be played per week on a Saturday afternoon, with the aim to play each match as a curtain-raiser to an AFL match or as a stand-alone match at a state-league venue.

Grand Final:

Grand Final to be played on Saturday August 6. Venue to be determined dependent on the competing teams.

Ends

As I take the Footy Express to games, I'll be lucky to catch the last 2-3 minutes of this game. Besides, I'll be at the Centrals v North trial match before hopping on the Footy Express.

Why the hell would they play this at Footy Pk? Should be played at Marrara.

I may catch the last 5 minutes....

Considering that the Crows v Hawthorn game is a Channel 10 game, will Fox have to provide their own cameras or can they borrow 10's (if they use separate OB companies). If they're supplying their own, it seems even more sillier to play this at AAMI rather than, say, TIO stadium.

I think you'll find that all games in Adelaide are covered by a company called Global Television, not sure if they still do but they used to. From what I gather it's only commentators etc that differ. So I would think that it would be the same setup for the HACL (Half Arsed Champions League) as it would be no matter who has the AFL game, ie: 10,7 or Foxtel.

2 words:

Andrew McLeod

I'd imagine lots of Crows fans will go early just to see him.

Good question, I know the Panthers (and presumably the Thunder) are not, so does it fall to the AFL?

Of course it does. Anything for a Queensland side. And for NT Thunder, well, they helped them into the Queensland League, so why not go that bit further for them.

Interesting that they didn't make this game the one game to be played as a stand-alone match at a state league venue in round 1? Which game will that be?

Thanks.
There's an AFL game in Perth every week but it appears this game has been sent to Tassie.

Will Morningside and NT Thunder season ticket holders get in for free, or will they be expected to pay AFL prices to gain entry?
