As we feared, the first product of the dirty Port merger ... the return of the SANFL curtain-raiser.
Fail.

No, it's a major fail with the Eagles having the Bye in Split round and Port having 2 games before the Powder Puffs.

I can think of one way you could have avoided the 3 week break :)

It's also the second year in a row that the Eagles have the bye over the split round. I'm not sure if it is a good or bad thing - I think we looked a bit rusty in the first quarter of the game following the two week break last season, but you could also argue that it will allow the team to freshen up and have a bit of a break before focusing on a big run into the finals (hopefully).

If Sturt or South didn't want the two weeks off they could have been a bit smarter with the fixturing - maybe swap Glenelg v South with Central v Sturt (and if they want a "blockbuster" game on each weekend, move Norwood vs Port to the second weekend).

From my point of view for the Eagles games:
1. Playing South in round 1 is probably the worst time you want to play them (their recent history early in a season is comparatively better than anytime after mid-May).
2. During the middle of the season we have a run of 12 games of which 6 of these are against either Central or Glenelg. As they are proven performers (at least in the minor round in Glenelg's case), this will be tough section - meaning that a strong start to the season will be critical to finishing in the top-3.
3. Happy not to be playing a curtain-raiser to the Power.

excellent......the Dogs get to unfurl the flag against South in Round 3, one assumes this is to give a few South fans a glimpse of something that haven't seen for 46 years, and then five weeks later we play them again, at Noarlunga, AT NIGHT !!!!!! and then we play THERE AGAIN in round 15, just as well we're close neighbours

also......if you play Norwood v Port rnd 1 at Norwood on a Friday night you'll get 7k to 8k so they decide to make them the pre-match entertainment to enhance the AFL game day experience.......have fun leggies supporters

Draw looks okay from an SAFC perspective, night matches at Panther Park will likely go pretty well in terms of crowd numbers and interest from the locals which is a good way to continue the work to connect the club to the area. Unsure why rounds 5 & 6 don't have a night match whereas other rounds have doubles, early in the season is the time to go for it?

On the negative, opening the season at an AFL match is an absolute disgrace. A number of people who would normally be going to the opening match of the season that barrack for neither club will likely not be bothering.

Can't wait for that one.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Unfortunately I think state footy is dead. I don't think we'll see another one imo. Hope I'm wrong though and this is just a one off.
