Mt Barker redevelopment

Postby Sojourner » Thu Dec 16, 2010 10:09 pm

550+ Million going in to include Mt Barker in the suburbs of Adelaide. What are the SANFL planning to do to include the fastest growing areas of the Adelaide HIlls into the footprint of the SANFL competition? How much longer can we keep ignoring these vastly growing residential areas and not include them in the SANFL?

I suggested this AGES ago! Sturt to Mount Barker & give Sturt's city & surrounding zones to South & West. I am selling land in Mount Barker at the moment, a friend of mine is doing a FOUR THOUSAND house subdivision in the next cuppla years, there will be more development as well. The mains gas is going up there soon, Adelaide can't expand to the west, the north & south has sprawled too far now, the only way is east! In hindsight, they should have built Monarto, hey! Thousands of new homes means thousands of new families, budding footballers in the making. The same goes for Centrals, Playford Alive when finished will have about 15,000 more houses! I feel We need to capture this zone by relocating further North, into The Playford Alive redevelopment, before it gets handed out to another club/s (probably Port, because throwing money at them doesn't work).

My impression from talking to some of the Sturt fans on this site and others is that there are a number of Sturt people that do not want to move away from Unley Oval to the hills. Hence relocating the Sturt FC to Mt Barker may not be the option that the SANFL can go with if the club are not united behind the move. When South moved from Panther Park to Noarlunga we had the luxury of having our members on side to support the move realising that doing so would set our club up financially for the long term which it has. If the club was split over it, the move would likely not have been made or would have been much more difficult to get of the ground, in fact we also had the added luxury of having a number of members heavilly in favour of the idea and pushing for it which I dont see as happening over at the SFC at this stage.

They are talkiing about well in excess of 20 000 homes in addition to the current developments that are ongoing there and in local areas like Nairne and so on. I dont think the SANFL can just stick their head in the sand and keep ignoring it, especially when the population growth in other areas is totally stagnant, the areas where the young families are, are areas where the SANFL needs to have strong representation.

Its not unreasonable for Sturt to be given the option of putting it to their members and gauging what level of support there is or isnt for a move, yet if Sturt choose not to make the move up to the hills I would suggest that the hills leagues need to be given an opportunity to create their own side in the same way that the Central Districts Football Association joined together to bring a side to the outer Northern suburbs in the 1960s when the area was experiencing the same problem / opportunity for the SANFL.

Using that same logic, should South be made to move to Seaford or Aldinga given all the redevelopment that is occuring down there, I mean it used to take me 20 mins to drive from Aldinga to Noarlunga when i used to live down there, the same time it takes to drive from Mt Barker to Unley....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Fairly certain its far less than 20 mins to drive from Aldinga to Noarlunga up commerical rd. within the same local council area. I also think its highly unlikely that you would get from Unley Oval through to the Mt Barker development in 20 mins, Mt Barker is a fair way on from Stirling and other areas in the hills closer to Adelaide.

You ever lived down there Soj?? Used to be 15 mins early 90s until they put traffic lights, cut the speed limit and put roundabouts all the way up Commercial Rd. With the Freeway now 15 mins to the toll gate from Mt barker, another 5 mins to Unley Oval up Glens Osmond rd down Young st, then Duthy and then Frederick St.

Seriosuly no different between Aldinga and Noarlunga and Mt Barker and Unley.

if Sturt move so should South....

You don't have to have your home ground close to an area to get supporters from it and South have proved that just plonking yourself in an area won't automatically get the locals to support you.

.... if that makes sense.

I am not criticising South BTW - just commenting on what I perceive has happened so far since they relocated (which I think was overdue anyway).

Their problem was that it came after the AFL was the main game in town. Had they done it in the 1970s they could have the support that Centrals have.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Centrals worked their arse off developing the Elizabeth area and the supporter base. They had exceptional supporter base BEFORE they won all those flags.
They just did it better than South.
Sturt have a history in the Hills area and should move to secure that area before someone else does ....like Blackwood being given to West Adelaide....another Chandler gem !
Does not have to happen tomorrow but planning now is the way to go.

I was at a Christmas function at Mt Barker one evening last week that was not related to the development issue, but I met a lot of locals who are not happy about it for two reasons:
1. They don't think the government will contribute enough towards infrastructure to prevent council rates sky-rocketing.
2. They are unhappy about all that farmland being buried under more bitumen instead of being kept for growing food - the view is that houses should be built on the least arable land not the most arable.

It was interesting to listen because I had looked at land in the area myself, thinking of a house/land package as an investment/rental property.
I was put off by the restrictions and conformity built into the rules of the subdivisions - it reminded me of that old song about housing that goes ".. and they're all built of ticky-tacky and they all look the same...".

just to tack off to the non footy side at the moment, IMHO the SANFL needs to do bugger all about it because the proposed development of Mount Barker is an absolute disgrace that lacks foresight, common sense and reality given that Mount Barker has already outgrown it's infrastructure now.

They can build it, but there's no guarantee that they will come.
