I'm having a family holiday down in Tassie with the in laws at the moment but throught I heard today Thebarton Oval is going to be used for one of the AFL Challenge games next year .... is this right?
Knowing what Elizabeth and Noarlunga went through to host such a game AND having been to Thebarton a couple of time recently for the Gridiron SA season ..... I can only assume an upgrade of some sort is on the cards.... especially if that want to play in the evening.

This from the AFL Web site
New regional venues to host NAB Challenge
By Jennifer Witham
1:30 PM Thu 16 Dec, 2010
The Adelaide suburb of Thebarton will host an AFL game for the first time at the oval where SANFL team Woodville-West Torrens plays, while the game will return to the Albury town of Lavington for the first time since 2006.

Hopefully that means the lights upgrade will go ahead and the Eagles can play a couple of night matches there next season as home games.
Unsure of the real benefit of having these games at SANFL venues though. Surely better off taking them out to the regional areas where they don't get as much access to AFL footy.

They've also been using VFL venues for a few years now, and a country region gets at least one Challenge game anyway. I think it's great that SANFL venues (even if it's a part time SANFL venue) get used for these games. Went to the game at Elizabeth earlier this year and it was great.

Isn't Thebarton a SAAFL venue nowadays?

In the whole debate around establishing / remodelling an AFL stadium closer to the city I'm surprised not to have heard something like this sooner

Only reason they use Thebby, Elizabeth and Noarlunga is simple, not cricket pitch or club to worry about. Dont think it is anymore or any less.

They might use Norwood for one next time.

Without trying to come across a sledging to the NFC fans on the site, the oval at the Parade would be unlikely to host an AFL match in the modern era without the brick boundary wall being dealt with. For the same reason that Norwood dont want to risk their players in the champions league, the AFL clubs are unlikely to have the same risk of spinal injury or whatever exposed to their players on a ground that does not conform to the expected specifications of an AFL venue.
Think it would be a good day out to see AFL at Thebarton, centrally located it would be packed out and a very good footy atmosphere!

Crows have been using it for trials for a number of years

What? Are they going to have baseball on the exact day and time that the AFL want to use it do they. I don't think that there would be a baseball game in the middle of March when Norwood Oval would be already marked for footy and would have had a couple SANFL trials.

Why do the Eagles have two grounds? Who owns Thebarton Oval? Is it possible that the Eagles could sell Thebby or will Torrens fans go postal if that happens?

Enough of the two clubs joke already.
We are one club and have been that way for 20 years now.
Maybe if North were to merge they could play some finals footy
