SANFL Finals 2010 - Radio Broadcaster of Choice

Postby Squawk » Thu Oct 07, 2010 4:18 pm

It's been great having the luxury of four radio broadcasters to choose from for the SANFL finals series matches. Out of curiosity, I'd be interested to know which station you preferred MOST, and why?

For me, it was LifeFM.

Firstly, there is loyalty to a community station who has broadcast matches throughout the full season and then finds itself competing with late entrants to the marketplace.

Secondly, I think the team always do a great job. They know the teams. They know the players. They know the statistics and they know the history.

Outside of games, I have had some enjoyment from the League Teams Show on 5RPH on Thursday nights; the SANFL Show on 5AA on Sunday nights and also ABC Radio during the AFL split round and Anzac Day.

The other media I really enjoyed this year was localfootysa.com.au , including Monday Morning Centreman.

All in all, SANFL fans have had a somewhat extraordinary range of media available to them this year. Thanks to all those who have contributed to my enjoyment in season 2010.

But remember - the poll is about match day broadcasts on radio ;) All other comments welcome though (and encouraged).

Agreed that Local Footy SA was a great leap forward in the Advertisers coverage of the SANFL, it linked in very well the comprehensive work the Messenger had done in 2009 with the promotional platform the Advertiser gives.

The MMCM was compulsary reading and I liked the way Jai disects games

The Magarey Coverage on the site (once you appreciate it was aims at a mainstream audience) was excellent.

All we need now for the Advertiser is to get their football fans survery correct but not just asking if our interest in the SANFL has declined but whether our interest has actually increased (which is indicated by crowds and memberships).

I voted LIFE

very good callers with a good understanding of the SANFL both currently and historically. The commentators are not biased towards the team they support or have employment with, nor are they biased against any particular individual teams.

Good initiatives with around the ground updates from games not having any media coverage.

For the finals it was great to see LIFE again join up with SAFOOTY for the web interaction with tipping and comments.

I didnt mind the MMCM.

the SANFL seemed to get a boost through adelaidenow, pity some of that isnt translated into the hard copies to help get the product out there.

I, too went with Life FM.

Simply, their match-day broadcasts are fantastic. They're there week-in, week-out supporting the SANFL and making sure they are the premier SANFL broadcaster. Their pre-game stuff last week was second to none, especially their live OB outside AAMI pre-game. Was great to not only drive to AAMI hearing this fantastic commentary of season 2010, but also to walk in to the ground hearing it as well.

While I am grateful for 5RPH's coverage of SANFL matches, sometimes their play by play commentary can be a bit of a 3AW-style ramble. They also tend to forget they're doing a radio, not a television commentary. While I understand the importance of sponsors, things like the 'Fielders steel roofing end' was confusing as only the commentators knew which end that actually was.

891 ABC Adelaide did a sensational job in the finals and the few minor round matches they do. For a station that's only able to do the occasional broadcast, they are quite knowledgeable about the SANFL and appear to have done their research.

While 5AA's Sunday night SANFL show is fantastic, their commentary team during finals is nothing short of cringeworthy. It amazes me that the bulk of their commentary team just rolls up for the finals without doing one ounce of research into the sides, and often the commentary is basically 'number 9 for Norwood passes to number 12, who kicks a goal'. 5AA should only be used as an absolute last resort.

AdelaideNow's LocalFootySA section was fantastic this year. It was great to get the highlights of non-ABC games (and I'm sure our international friends loved having match highlights so easily accessible), and the MMCM was compulsory reading.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

RPH for me.

Been them since I started following footy. I prefer putting up with the sponosrship stuff than anything religion based (sorry LifeFM) and they don't have an ad break in the middle of a quarter. Also ever since LifeFM changed to the inbedded media player thing and stopped streaming on RealPlayer they freeze and crash my browser.

The Thursday night League Teams Show is usually great although depends a fair bit on who's presenting.

I thought the media coverage, really improved this season. As mentioned, I appreciated the many articles on SAlocal footy (adelaide Now), and the radio coverage.
I also thought Brenton Philips and Soders unbiased GF commentary was very good. Hopefully, they're involved next year.
Despite what some have said, I think the SANFL is regaining interest and momentum, hopefully continued improving media coverage will assist this.

I must admit I struggle to listen to RPH these days, in fact I think I gave up on them after about Round 5.

No disrespect intended toward them because I think the SANFL needs all the coverage it can get and they have been fantastically loyal to the competition, but DB and Smithy and co really don't provide enough information I don't think.

Hopefully others don't find it as annoying because like I said RPH have been fantastic for the SANFL, but I think they really need to address their commentating personnel.

Personal thoughts only, of course.

Yeah its an interesting one...Wouldn't it be fantastic if RPH (being a true community station after all) actually opened it up to some different people..maybe throw the doors open to the public...Especially now the Monday morning sports show has moved away from the old Hookesy and Aitken style

Often think that the crop of community media men...(the bulk of who are good ie Nanks, Kendall, Big Phil) were in the right place at the right time and I wonder how much their 'right' to provide this service is reviewed..I would guess no as ratings don't matter

I probably listened to more on ABC just because of pure range and driving back from Melbourne 3 weeks in a row but as soon as I got in range it was definately LifeFM!
