When does the import rule come into affect and what is the official rule they are using.
Does this begin from next season, there seems to be alot of confusion as to when and how the rule works.

It comes into effect next year and now applies to players recruited from other State leagues (or TAC Cup) from the 2010 season onwards. i.e if your recruit started playing for you in 2009 or earlier, he will not be classified as an import.

So is it 2 imports or 8.
If its 2 imports, does that mean South Adelaide effectively couldnt recruit from outside SA, how is the rule helping the SANFL, how can South improve all it will do is keep Central stronger.

South and a number of other clubs are argueing with the SANFL to have this rule delayed for another 2 years in order to gain a clearer picture of available players given the 2 new AFL teams extensive recruiting and the effect this will have on both player drain from SANFL and availability of players from interstate. If this rule isn't delayed i fear yet another tough year for my club and those clubs that loose a number of players (retirements, leaving etc) who have poor or very young reserves and already have their quota of interstate players.

I believe it's still the originally mooted 8 imports.
Darley, I think this decision's just been made so I suspect that means they will not be deferring the rule. Obviously Liddle, Horne and Gotch will be classified as imports but that's about it isn't it, from last year? So you could recruit up to 5 more next year from other State leagues/TAC cup.

What about that recruit from the Western Bulldogs does he count??
One would suspect that all Football Departments at all clubs would have raided the Country scene to unearth some gems for 2011 and given any former players drafted to the AwFL a call that their is a home if needed.....

No way, to stand up to the AFL would to not have an import rule exsist at all.

Was going to say, the import rule will still be there, just not retrospectively.

Give it 3-5 years and the next step will be an age restriction rule.
eg,
Each club must have 3 players under the age of 21 in every league game.
or
No more than 5 players over the age of 25 per side, per game

Yes, well they're saying they've removed the retrospectivity but the rule's being introduced in 2011 and applies to players recruited for the 2010 season, so I'd argue they've just made it a little less retrospective.

Its interesting to note that for South, Wundke, Stribling and Daniel have all performed pretty well, normally South are amongst the first to recruit from the VFL, perhaps the new import rule has in fact been of benefit to the club as opposed to causing it problems in recruiting. Plenty of SAFC players have been recruited into other SANFL sides, so seeing our club go that way likely isnt the worst way to get ahead, two wins in three games suggests that its clearly not a bad strategy.

If I was a South supporter, I'd wait until the end of the year to make that judgement.
