Very Disappointing Crowd?

Postby whufc » Mon Sep 13, 2010 10:04 am

Apparently yesterdays two games due a crowd of around 11,000.

This would have to be considered very dissapointing wouldn't it?

I understand the Royal Show was on but with no Adelaide AFL sides in the finals i thought alot more would attend.

The weather was as perfect as you could get for going to watch football as well.

11000 is less than 3000 supporters per team not even including neutral fans that im sure would have been there.

In Round 22 Glenelg vs Norwood had around 5000 atttend while the Sturt vs Eagles round 23 game had roughly 2000 attend in atroicous weather. So in affect we have only had around and extra 2000 people per game attend the finals.

Worrying is it? especially this week with the City to Bay run on.

11,449 was a dissapointing crowd, I agree...

Was hoping 15K would show up but not to be...

Didn't think it was either excessive or disappointing.
Plenty of amatuer and country GF celebrations over the weekend, and think you'll find it is about average for this first weeks of finals, whufc. 2008 seems a bit of an exception to the general average.

true but arent minor rounds crowds up,

wouldnt the SANFL be hoping increased minor round crowds would lead to larger final series crowds.

The Royal Show finished on Saturday night so that had no impact.

I agree, I think 11,000 is very poor and would ahve thought closer to 15-16,000 would have been there. Especially with Norwood people coming out of the woodwork and Glenelg fans having reason to ( hehe ) believe they are in a strong position.

Sturt always have a strong following and we all know the Eagles dont produce big crowd numbers but I would have expected them all to be there.

I agree maybe the GF post-match hangovers kept some from Amateur clubs at home yesterday, but I expected alot more people there, especially as it was a double header.

Also considered the SFL 2nd Prelim was on yesterday -A's match between between Brighton & Morphett Vale. They have a large Glenelg supporter base who turn up to a lot of our Sunday games. This match was expected to be a block-buster worthy of the GF really, so attracted many SFL people there. I left after U16s to head to footy park, and crowd was pretty big even then

AAMI stadium just doesnt work anymore for anyone, cant wait to get the finals back to Adelaide Oval.

Personally I thought there would be a heap more Norwood fans than were actually there, hopefully those that doubted now believe and will come out next week.

Why doesn't Footy Park work anymore?

Precious lot the modern day footy "fan".

Probably right, from what I could tell the hard core fans of all sides were there yesterday. However the part time fans and neutrals probably stayed away and watched it on TV. If at Adelaide Oval you will get more of these fans attending for a whole range of reasons including public transport, access, pubs nearby etc

Probably exactly what was expected, only difference to last year was Norwood were there instead of North and there was about 1000 more this year than last year.

The SANFL are hell bent on making Football Park as sterile atmosphere as possible and that is the result. A good reason for the SANFL clubs to reject their plan to make Football Park an SANFL exclusive venue once the Adelaide Oval venue is up and running. We have moved back into the suburbs and the SANFL competition has moved on since 1991. If Adelaide Oval is not available, Thebarton would be a good venue once the restorations are completed for the first rounds of SANFL finals.

AAMI stadium sucks.

No atmosphere, too hard to get there & back when drinking, too big for SANFL.

What is the Parade, Glenelg Oval max capacities?

over in WA we play all WAFL finals (barr the GF) at the suburban grounds, and don't do double headers. It creates so much better atmosphere for us, as small attendances can really get lost at Subi Oval. There was around 10000 at the prelim on the weekend, and it looked fantastic on TV. It gave a real finals atmosphere at the ground too.

Would the SANFL benefit from doing this?

Whether it is an obvious answer or not, if you didn't go to AAMI yesterday, why not?

My preferences would be 1/ Adelaide 2/ Thebarton 3/ Home finals 4/ Footy Park.
Never been a great fan of the home final idea, but now prefer to going down the Footy Park track, which is sad because I used to love Footy Park.
Would prefer a more neutral venue such as Thebarton rather than home finals. Sure the Eagles may play a game or two there during the year, but no reason every team can't play on neutral game there during a season.

personally didnt go, Central weren't playing so i had my 2 year old daughter with me, had a bbq around bulldogs2004 house and with samUUUdogs, watched the game on telle while having a few quite beers. Was a very cheap day which is needed with Dogs possibly playing finals 3 weeks in a row.

In saying that though the $14 for a double header is great value especially considering i paid $15 to watch the Div 2 ammos GF.

IMHO finals has to be a double header creates a great atmosphere

minor round= suburban warfare played at local dung heaps
finals= festival of football played in the ideal location to suit a 10-15000 crowd Adelaide Oval
grand final = show case day to be played on the big stage Football Park
