And the underdog is....

Postby Squawk » Mon Aug 30, 2010 1:13 pm

All SANFL fans are blessed with all that is promised by the clash between top (Glenelg) and second (Central), with the major prize of the minor premiership and a week's rest, and the secondary benefit of making a statement not only to the losing opposition team but also to the other three finalists.

The Bays have a winning streak the envy of many, whilst the Dogs are coming off two consecutive away losses to the Eagles and Sturt.

So who goes in to this game as the underdog? (no pun intended ;) )

I cant see Centrals losing another game this year... If they do It wont be this week anyway. When was the last time that Centrals lost 3 games in a row 1999?

Obviously top spot is a fair carrot this week, but I would have thought 'don't get injured' will be the priority this week?

On the flip side, busting a gut to get top and the week off to freshen up is probably far more valuable.

The bookies are only one stakeholder and their market is determined by numerous things beyond form, including the size and volume of bets. So their prices are only part of the answer.

I'm interested in this game too, and the Sturt vs Eagles game. I've been going to SANFL games for over 30 years now.

As for my team, don't forget that Norwood finished well out of finals contention last year so for us, this year is an improvement which has to be put in a lot of (off topic) context but is something for worthy discussion another day no doubt.

As for underdog, it's a tough call but judging by the poll the Bays folk have rallied to the (voting)cause ;) . Certainly Ron Fuller and Nathan Bassett have both said in recent days that the Bays are the best side in the competition so perhaps their wives should be having a few wagers with the bookies.

Of course Central are underdogs, coming off two terrible performances with question marks over their non exsistent forward line, many players trying to back up from injuries unsettling the side and the lack of quality second ruckmen.

The bays on the other hand are business as usual winning games comfortably playing as well as they need too. They have two gun key forwards and a very settled line up which won't be 'bullied' by the Dogs enforcers.

Anything less than a premiership to the bays will be seen as a failure.

And anything less than a premiership to Central ( and Norwood, Eagles, etc) will be cause for self-congratulatory back slaps and the popping of champagne corks?

nah, the Bays aren't used to winning the big dance, so business as usual if they don't ...

Maybe, but this year has a bit different 'feel". They have two of the top 5 goal kickers (that unfortunately are actually kicking straight) and four out of the top five in marks!
Besides Ronnie Fuller reckons the Bays are premiership favourites (hopefully the kiss of death, though I wish it was Noble who said it).
To top it off they've supposedly printed their Tiger '10 t-shirts. Anyone seen these?

Yep, special Eric Robjent, Rex Voigt, Chris McDermott and Matthew Bode T-shirts.

Not a mention of finals on them anywhere unlike last year....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Glenelg are definitely the underdogs, as is every team for the trip out to Elizabeth.

On form though Centrals are the underdogs.

Should be a close game...

Yeah mate, we're in a small hole atm but not always a bad thing to chalk up one or two "losses you have to have" before the real deal begins. The Bays have now found themselves in a place where they cant avoid the spotlight, so lets make sure its shining nice and bright for a little while yet! ;) No Crows, no Power in the finals yet so the mainstream media should really be starting to look for stories and there's no better place to start than Brighton Rd, hey! ;)
