What's with all these clubs and their circuses at the football?

Yesterday we were "treated" to kids day and a parade around the oval accommpanied by the LOUDEST PA in the SANFL.
Let's get back to just playing the Reserves and League game at 2.10 pm (prefer 2.20 pm) on SATURAY afternoon without music, sponsors announcements, commentary etc. and leave the circus and sideshows to the AFL.

Also to the people in the annoncers booth turn the Mic off when you have your private conversations.

Nothing wrong with trying to get people back to the footy. Better than doing nothing. Didn't inhibit anything that normally goes on. I'm guessing for every few kids there was an adult that had to take them. I thought very good iniative by the Eagles, it was probably the most Eagles supporters I've seen at a game.
Get the kids interested in SANFL, the parents realise whate a good/cheap "product" it is.

When I enquired at the booth the official told me they usually have free donuts when they play us.

I prefer free donuts.

Not all clubs have an area where breeding occurs so rapidly and 5 generations can go to the footy together on a Saturday afternoon. Therefore promotions like this are needed to boost interest and keep our clubs alive! A good initiative by the Eagles!

I was simply stating that it appeared amateurish, nothing more.

any promotion should be seen as a great advertisment for the whole league in general.....get the kids going & WANTING to go now & a lot will keep going as they get older & in turn they'll take their kids in the future

it used to be like this. start them playing in school, then they will want to go. taking them to watch grown-ups bash into each other...on and off the oval....would probably over-awe and intimidate them.

The most number of people wearing Eagles scarfes and colours you mean. ;) Cause I never wear any Eagles stuff unless we are playing South or West.

Aerie is kind of correct, but a bit stereotypical. By that I am saying, I suspect the zone around the Woodville area is more older than the Central area. Hence the reason why we also have Virginia and Two Wells as part of our metro zone.

Therefore, people like PhilH need to be congratulated to promote the game in this manner. It wouldn't do any other team harm to have something like this, or anything to sell the SANFL to youngsters.

Phil does a great job the most kids I've seen in ages at the ground .
Good way to bring the Family back to footy.
Its a hell of a lot cheaper for a family to go the SANFL over the AFL
Kids at the SANFL get in free
How much at the AFL ?

This is directed at Groucho
Of all clubs that have heaps of "kids" and families would be Centrals .
Your area maybe younger and easier to bring them in while some clubs have way older areas and no kids.
You have a problem with club sponsorship I take it.And you don't get to any ground early? Your own ground included to hear every sponsor announced.
Sounds like you have the correct name want this changed change it at home first.Get the Dogs to stop announcing sponsors .If not stay quiet yourself!!

And in my own defense here of my above post .
I along with many other Eagle fans complained that much and wrote in the annual members survey .Concerning the 1930's marching music that was played at oval ave on game days last year.
And take it from me it took weeks of complaining to the CEO, who was doing the correct thing. It was the guy on the MIC.
I think he was finally told once and for all.
So Groucho you can change some stuff.

Just goes to show you can never please everyone.

As the co-ordinator of the Eagles Kids Day let me share a bit on the day.

PA issues .... yes when the wireless mic was on a 3rd party interfence came on (ie the conversations were not coming from me or the announcers booth, possibly ABC TV staff using same frequency) we cut it down as much as possible and it was all done 10 minutes before the start of the game.

As for being amateur ... its KIDS ... its open to all to be involved .... its suppossed to be low key, accessible to all and fun ... and based on feedback received that was exactly what happened.

For something more professional go here ... http://www.wwtfc.com.au/kids-corner.aspx

What I found facinating was that we had a nice group of young Central fans that got a thrill to march around the Oval, wave their flags and cheer the Bulldogs on the field. They all came up for the donuts afterwards and many even took took the Eagles goody bag.

Many Westies fans would remember our first Kids Day last year at Woodville and I was flattered when the Bloods copied the parade idea for one of their night games earlier this season.

Kids Day is one of about 20 projects the clubs is currently undertaking with the aim of growing our supporter base. Many of those projects are junior based others focussed on community, media and other ideas.

I would encourage all SANFL fans to go back to their club and ask
- how many kids are involved in footy in our zone (ie these are kids who already love footy and are local to your club)
- how many junior members does our club have.
I guarantee that for most clubs those two answers will lead to a lot more questions.

Just for the record the Eagles now have over 600 signed up U13 junior members, another 250 in teenage years.
In to those signed up addition there are almost another 2,000 kids in our zone who have received Eagle junior membership packs (& we have contact details for) as part of their payment as an auskick participants or through our new junior metro club partnerships. (NB Dutchy these auskickers and club are not included in our membership figures although another club that runs something similar but smaller does include).

This gives us a great base to develop a large Eagle supporter base for the future and I'm happy to compare these numbers with any other club in the SANFL.

Kids Day is the culmination of those initiatives the aim, to give our junior supporters some great memories of Woodville Oval and the Eagles that will see them come back for more in the years to come.

For years I have to put up with jibes on this site about the Eagles small supporter base ... well the club has shown the vision to do pioneering things in changing that. I appreciate the faith they have put in me to drive this and I hope over time I repay that faith with some long term benefits.

Great work Phil, dont know how anyone could be critical of any promotion at the SANFL. Perhaps only those that dont having anything similar at their home ground? I know a few CDFC members that cringe at their ground announcer/song selection.

Anything that encourages kids/families is a great thing. I don't get to many SANFL games but I have been to Richmond a couple of times this year coz my son has played in the mini-league at half time. I have two younger sons that enjoyed the free jumping castle in the outer (and I enjoyed the jumping castle looking after my kids). That jumping castle actually enticed me to to go back again and pay to watch an additional game this year and in turn earning the WAFC an extra $100 odd dollars of my money on entrance/food/grog. Lets support these initiatives not bag them.
