Round 21 - WWT v Central Dist @ Woodville 2.10pm Sat 21 Aug

Postby GWW » Sun Aug 15, 2010 11:45 pm

The Eagles would have been disappointed with their round 20 form but the task ahead of them this week isn't any easier.

The Bulldogs continue to show why they are the pace-setters of the league and it would be a big upset if they were to lose to the Eagles this week. I think Centrals will win by just over 5 goals.

We don't travel well at Woodville, at the start of the year, I put this down as a loss, still think so too. More bloody injuries don't help, either.

yep yep,

Was there any injuries to come out of the Port Adelaide game, could possibly have Gowans x2, Switala, Schell, Gunston and Spurr back from injury. Not sure about Sutherlands availability but have a feeling he has to play for Berri again this weekend.

I think this game will be extremly tight and wont be decided until the last 5 minutes of the game.

With a better skill level in front of goal this weekend I think we can be very competitive. In the main most of the games we play against the doggies are fairly tough, hard fought and close encounters. I don't expect this to be any different. I think the dogs will win but by under 4 goals.

yes, that was the game where big Lindsay, at half time, kicked the ball into the man on the mark whilst standing about 10 metres out, dead in front. Apart from that, can't remember winning there for ages.

And there have been a few pumpings that the Eagles have handed the Dogs in recent seasons at this venue...

Besides the 84 point pummmelling in 2008, most games at Woodville have been relatively tight - last year we lost by 17, 2006 we lost by 24, 2004 we lost by 6 (we didn't play at Woodville in 2007), we won at Woodville from 2000-2003 (2003 was the game Centrals kept the Eagles scoreless after half time) and 2005.

IIRC in those two games we played terrible and never really looked like winning despite the score being relatively tight.

Would be disappointed if we don't show a really strong effort the next two weeks at grounds we have struggled at, personally i think we will drop at least one of these games.

I expect the dogs will be loathe to drop a game at this time of year, especially to any potential finals rival. Dogs should win by 2-3 goals. Hopefully we start to get some idea of what the side we want to play in the finals looks like over the next few weeks with some guys coming back. I doubt we've had a more disruptive season for a while with all the blokes coming in and out this year. Thankfully it hasn't hurt us to date, but I still don't think you want to be changing too much this late in the season.

Will be interesting to see who makes way should Schell, Gowans, Gowans, Gunston, Callinan and Switala be available for selection. Especially with Barmby playing a really good game on Saturday. Would be hard to drop him after that game.

I think the Eagles would have been pretty disappointed with their effort against the Bays. I feel they will come out with something to prove, that they can defeat a side above them. We have a good record in recent years at Woodville against CD and feel we can win or at worst, have a close loss.

Eagles came out fired up against Norwood and got over run. Same against Glenelg and with poor kicking, got over run. The Eagles seem to play fairly consistently, winning games against teams lower on the ladder and losing games against teams higher on the ladder. Not thrashing teams and not getting thrashed.

A win here would give much needed confidence to a team that just looks middle of the road at the moment. With a good run of injuries and the refresher of two weeks off not long ago, there is no excuse for the Eagles not to perform.

Unfortunately I think this game will just confirm we are a fair way off being better than middle of the road.

The Eagles look set to be boosted with Nathan Bock playing for them after he was effectively dismissed from the Adelaide Crows after announcing he has signed with the Gold Coast.

Mind you this is coming from Footy Classified

Nathan was playing on the GF in 2004 and had no impact at all. It's interesting how AFL players come back and usually don't do much.

Woody Oval was the scene of the most amazing win I can remember, when we held the hybrids scoreless after half time to come from miles behind and win in 2003.

I still remember the stunned silence as I walked past the cheer squad after the game.

I think it was also the game, Nathan Steinberner popped his shoulder, chased the ball picked it up with one hand and cleared it downfield. He then ran off to have his shoulder put back in its socket. Tough leader.

See this is the sort of stuff that will ensure the long term viability of the SANFL. Don't need relocation of clubs you need clubs to embrace what they got in their zone and work it. Hmm now where did PhilH work as marketng manager, another great decision by South hey Soj???

10/10 to PhilH and the Eagles with this.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
