8 teams or 9?

Postby SANFLnut » Fri Aug 13, 2010 5:00 pm

There seems to be an acceptance that we "need" to have an 8 team comp.

I would sugest that many/some players, coaches, fans etc. actually appreciate the occasional week off that the bye brings. Certainly an issue when teams double up with two byes in a row, but generally I think it is a positive aspect of our comp. I think the drive to kill a team off that some people display is unfounded.

I voted 8 but I really don't think it will happen.
A club would have to die a natural death
or
There would have to be a voluntary amalgamation
Realistically I don't think either will happen as supporters from all clubs seem to band together when it gets that desperate

9 is a pain in the arse but is the most likely scenario for a long time yet

10 wouldn't be sustainable if the 10th side was from metro Adelaide and the AFL seem hell bent on preventing clubs from outside SA entering the SANFL

I'd vote for an option for 10.
Any even number preferably.

An 8 team comp is only achievable through extinction for a club or a messy merger, neither of which i would wish on any supporter closely involved. Personally i could think of nothing worse and i can imagine the damage that could be done by it.
Besides, there will always be teams that struggle on or off field, no matter how many teams you have.
9 is fine.
Surely getting rid of the bye and 'tidying' up the comp in that respect is not worth another part of our football heritage going.

I dont think there will be a choice about it. I believe it will just happen. If the SANFL wanted 10 teams then they would have gone harder at trying to get a NT team in the comp. But look where that ended up.

At the beginning of next year kick out any club that doesn't serve Coopers.

While I voted 8 because I think it is the most economically viable option, it may be that the bye has a positive side.
Nathan Bassett seemed to think so when interviewed the other day.
I really don't think 10 or more is sustainable.

Yes, from a spectator point of view, the bye is the pits, but from a player point of view it is probably a welcome intrusion into the season.
