Split Round? - WTF!?

Postby Mr66 » Sat Jul 17, 2010 7:36 pm

Why do you need a split round when there already is a bye?
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

It's fantastic from a player management point of view, gives every team no more than a five game run into the finals.

Also compensates for the week off for the state game the players usually get.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Agree fully. Players bodies cop a massive hammering, I'm a fan of the split round from a sports medicine perspective but I can see how the fans hate it.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

What about the club who has the bye in the split round - 2 weeks off. Bloody ridiculous and I hope it doesn't happen again next season.

I hope Glenelg puts its hand up next year for it. You don't realise what a leg up you've been given by the SANFL in the run to the finals. Two weeks to freshen up players physically and mentally after they've been going hard at it since November, absolute gold.

I don't think the Eagles can complain. Other clubs have had this situation around state games which we haven't, but this time it is our turn.
Further, as luck would have it, it has worked out perfectly, because the three teams that are vying for 4th and 5th are all "affected" by it. We don't play for three weeks, while Sturt and West play one game in four.

As ambays said, if it means that everyone has no more than five games running into the finals, then this is a brilliant bit of planning.

The dogs won a flag (or 2?) coming off a round 23 bye, first week off the finals as minor premier, won second semi, another week off then the granny. Can't be too much of a disadvantage.

If you don't have a split round, you have to either fit an extra bye in for every team or change the number of rounds.

Should have started a week later, that way we wouldn't have the split round.

I think starting the same week as the AFL is an advantage. We get to piggy back on their promotion and you don't have a situation where AFL listed players are twiddling their thumbs if fit and not selected while their team mates are playing.
