Concerning Trend? The Woodville Oval Incident 3/7

Postby whufc » Sun Jul 04, 2010 11:53 am

The amount of players in recent years that have been getting man handled by spectators during and after games. I personally can think of at least 3 cases where this has happened to Central players and know of other times where it has happened ala woodville yesterday, Ackland last season.

These people should be banned for life, there is no place for supporters who chose to be involved in onfield or offield battles.

And if the player has been proved to be harassing members of the public leading to said violence, they should also cop a penalty.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Pretty easy to identify the people involved, I'd hope the clubs ban them for a while. The SANFL doesn't need this kind of idiocy keeping families from attending games.

Weslo should be banned too.

As can be seen by the pics on AdelaideNow, Weslo were doing nothing to diffuse the situation and they were informed by police that they hadn't done their job properly.
The fact of the matter is that if the player in question was moved on after he made the comments that Weslo heard, none of this would have happened.

I'm not even going to bother to defend or denigrate the Sturt fans involved in this incident. But going off what has been written on AdelaideNow, you'd seriously think that the Eagles fans were running about handing out gifts to orphans, helping old ladies cross the road and baking cakes for the disabled when they were suddenly set upon by a hoard of gangsters.

Geez... give me a break...

No one can tell me Treeby was walking by minding his own business, hugging and kissing babies and then the cheer squad decided to chase him for no reason. Show some balance people and be a bit more realistic. While there's no doubt some of the Sturt fans acted stupidly, there can be no doubt some Eagles fans were likewise acting stupid.

Supporters who are losing don't suddenly have a go at fans who are winning, we've all been there, winning fans will have a pop verbally at the losing fans and that can set it off.

Both sides have some blame here...

While both clubs can throw their hands in the air and say "well we can't control our supporters", neither club would want to walk away from disciplining a player who has helped instigate an incident. Should a Sturt player provoke Centrals fans this coming weekend, I'd expect that player to be sanctioned.

You can't do anything about the public, but sure as hell can expect a certain level of decorum from your own players, officials and various other representatives.

Ive been to a lot of games since Weslo started and I can quite confidently say Ive seen them create more situations than they've diffused. The SANFL are to blame for employing them. Do the SANFL care? It appears not, Im sure the cocktail franks were warm in corporate box at last nights AFL game though.

Agreed.

However, if Treeby did what was alleged, he is a piss poor representative of the club. I'd have his contract terminated.

If people think its acceptable, then hey why not get all the 100kgs blokes from the Magoos out hunting in packs to quieten down the few soles that some people in the public find undesirable. Oh that's right, WESLO were hired to do that and what a fantastic job they do...

Look at the grannie, every year, same old mugs, doing the same old crap and each year the SANFL sees no evil, hears no evil, speaks no evil... mighty fine example they set themselves.

Clubs can do little about fans, it opens a whole can of worms trying to identify, prosecute and so on. The league is the problem here, if clubs could do something, then I'd expect Centrals would have done something years ago about their fans during GFs.

They haven't and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that it purely and simply comes down to being too difficult. It's the league that has the resources and maybe the legal might to press home a point.

It doesn't, so it'll continue to occur...

This isn't a dig at Centrals specifically, just trying to highlight an example where the same breach occurs year in year out, but alas we don't seem to be making any progress towards remedying the situation.

I'm sure the club would if it could...

It wasn't the comments directly that caused the fraca. It was the fact that some of our supporters went up to Weslo to ask why some of our supporters were threatened with eviction when the player relating to this incident wasn't even looked at. The player continued on with it while our supporters were talking to Weslo.
If the mods will allow it I can post on here what transpired from start to finish (without naming anyone) so as to end speculation.

In recent times yes, I'm sure there was a gaggle of knobs well before 2000 as well... this isn't a problem unique to Centrals, based on the dislike of Port in previous decades, I can only assume there were issues then too.

The discussion here should not be on who has the worst supporters or whose supporters cause the most trouble, the discussion should be about how does the league do something about it? Can they? Can the clubs?

I'm sure if we polled everyone in this forum about incidents they've had with other fans, we'd probably find every club has had some of its supporters act like total tossers at some point in time... though I've personally never come across a nasty South supporter! :-)

Centrals have been highlighted a lot in recent years...

Sturt have been highlighted a lot in recent years...

Maybe those two are the worst, but surely every other club isn't supported by angels and angels alone...

I'm sure Cornes will still find a way to blame it in Centrals fans!
