Possible returns for the Doggies?

There has been a little bit of talk on a few other threads about the possible return of a couple of former Central Premiership players in Matt Slade and Yves Sibenaler.

A bit of media talk about it as well, as below:

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl ... 5884845588

Jai Bednall in his Monday Morning Centreman article wrote:
CENTRAL

Eight-time premiership player Matthew Slade will be back from a holiday in Spain in the next fortnight but he might not be returning to Gawler Central in the Barossa league as expected. Central District CEO Kris Grant said the Bulldogs had discussed the possibility of Slade returning to boost the club's pursuit of another premiership. ``We'd be silly not to look at it,'' Grant said. ``Roy would obviously have to weigh a lot of things up, but we'd be silly not to look at it.'' Grant said the Dogs plan to sound out Slade when he returns. Yves Sibenaler is four weeks away from finishing a recruitment course for the fire brigade in Darwin and appears to be missing the Bulldogs badly. ``I finish the course up soon and haven't completely given up hope of heading back to play. But that's probably wishful thinking,'' he said. ``The boys look like they've been going really well considering the injuries. I want to be a part of it.''

And then the thoughts of Roy Laird himself on this topic:

Jai again, after speaking to Roy wrote:
"They're blokes who have played through a great era. Historically you're always a bit itchy when you finish. So they're probably suffering that now. We're happy with the group at the moment and any issues that come up down the track we'll have a look at.'' Central coach Roy Laird on the potential return of Matthew Slade and Yves Sibenaler.

Would be interesting to see if these 2 players could force their way into the Dogs best 21 and if they were able to, how would the players that they replace feel?

Would be a terrible move IMO, why do they need them, more negatives than positives

Don't think there is to many negatives at all Dutchy. They come back to play they start in the reserves and if their form warrants, they may earn a league spot with no guarentee of a league football.

There experience would be invaluble for our very young reserves side even if they weren't to play a league game.

Lets be honest a Central line up with a fully fit in form Sibenaler would be alot stronger than having Reichart (no disrepsect intended) down there, plus he adds versatiltity in he can go forward as well.

Very similar to Rudolph coming back to Bay last year.

Fully Fit?
Match hardened?
Deserted the club 4 months ago?
Now changed his mind?
How would the playing group feel?
And your almost certain to get top spot, why change whats got you there?

And I wasnt a fan of Rudolph returning, and was glad he didnt get a League game...

Only negatives would be for the rest of the comp. We won't be picking them unless they're in the best 21. No player gets a game with the dogs out of charity. Just ask Scott Lee.

Yeah some very good points there, saying he deserted the club is a tad harsh imho, he had a great job oppurtunity that didn't present itself in SA you would think alot of SANFL players would have taken it.

Apparently Yves has stayed very fit with his training but obviously that doesn't make for match fitness.

Like i said i can't see the harm in him playing reserves football with no promise of getting a league gig, if due to injuries or other players being out of form i don't think there would be to many better replacements currently available in the whole of Australia.

One area the Dogs look vunerable is the third tall defender, playing Hayes there is great but im sure Roy would rather use running from a half back flank

Reiterating what WHUFC said to a degree. At the start of the season he was as fit as he's ever been. Not match hardened, probably as much as anyone that's done a hammy or been out for a couple of weeks.
Took a job opportunity, that would be a career for life. He wasn't just taking a year off to travel, or hadn't lost the desire to play or be part of the club.
If he's in the top 21, then the group should be fine with it.
He's an experienced premiership player that at worst will add depth, who knows what injuries may eventuate. A tall experienced defender, that will have to earn his spot. Not a hard decision.

Absolutely no negatives to have those two back playing with us and giving their experience to the younger lads on the training track and in the Reserves. If they force their way back into the league side through form, even better.
I don't see Dutchy complaining re the return of Bode and Rudolph after their retirements. Sour grapes as a result of yesterday perhaps??
Cheers

A serious conversation with myself coming from a different POV and I get told sour grapes?

If you just want positive wank, head to the club forum.

And Bode and Ruldolph didnt return mid season to league footy...

Fully Fit? Not many players are "fully fit" this time of year anyway. They wouldn't have lost any conditioning.

Match hardened? I reckon a few years playing league footy and finals footy allows them to know what he needs to do. And with a few games in the reserves this won't be an issue for any bloke picked to play finals.

Deserted the club 4 months ago? Not what happened.

Now changed his mind? Yeah, that happens from time to time.

How would the playing group feel? These guys would have to earn their selection. The guys in the team now have the advantage of holding the spot. I certainly didn't hear any complaints when Luke McCabe won his last premiership medal.

Neither would Slade and Sibenaler be returning straight to 'League' football. This would only occur if their fitness and form warranted it. They would not be the only footballers to do this this season. Dabrowski has done similar at the Eagles. NO negative comments on here about his return.
There is no doubt that Sibenaler's fitness would be sound, with the course that he has been going through up in Darwin. I just really can't see any negatives at all to two players who have given Central long and wonderful service coming back to the club. This is particularly so when we have lost a key small and a key tall in O'Sullivan and Milne for the season.
The only question really is whether Matt and Yves really do wish to return.
Cheers

Would agree with you, Dutchy, except that Rudolph did return midseason in the hope of playing league. It was just lack of form that kept him out. There is no difference between his return and the return of Yves or Sladey should they indeed return.
Always good to see players have second thoughts about retirement and come back to their club, particularly those who have given long service. You are a long time out of football once you do finally pull up stumps.
Cheers

Bzzt wrong, injury after three games back...

Oops, sorry. However, his hope was to play League. Whether it was injury or form that stopped him, the hope was still there
So his return was no different to what Sibenaler or Slade would be doing if they indeed did decide to try to come back. It is all rumour and innuendo at the moment.
I just can't honestly see any negatives to it at all though. They would have to earn their place, just like anyone else. It is more than likely they would only play Reserves if they did come back. However, if their form was good enough to get them back into the League side, how could that be a negative?
Cheers

If I am wrong, I apologise.
However, I had been informed that Sammy had put his hand up to play league last year, if he deserved a spot. Anyway, I still can't see many negatives in Yves and Matt returning to the club to help the younger players.
Cheers
