AAMI Stadium capacity cut to half? -- Adel. Oval scenario

According to the latest on the Adelaide Oval redevelopment, if the further improvements go ahead in order for a permanent AFL presence to happen, apparently AAMI Stadium will have its capacity cut down to about 25000 and will once again be an SANFL venue.

I like the idea of the SANFL re-claiming its home ground as somewhere to play neutral matches, but to cut it down to 25000 would be a bad move. If they're going to cut it back, I think somewhere around 35000 is more like it especially for Grand Finals. Thoughts?

Agree 30-35000 is needed. Would also like some proposals to come forward with these designs if only ideas

I think we had about 30 odd thousand there for last years GF, so it may mean many people miss out on going to the GF like it was pre-Crows days.
I remember lining up at Bass for half a day to get Grand Final tickets in the 80's.

But other than the GF, I must admit it was like a ghost town stadium during the other finals last year. Definately lacked atmosphere because of the capacity of the stadium compared to the crowd there, and that was after the tarps were covering some sections of the arena. So it would be even worse in the minor rounds.

It could be used for clashes heralded as "Match of the Round" where there is an expectation of a good crowd, but imagine a North V South match with a crowd of 1500 like there was a couple of weeks ago?

If AAMI was to revert back to being SANFL Football Park then 25,000 capacity is probably logical.
To put it into perspective, the Norwood V Port game this year at the crowd got rave write ups as they got about 6500. At the Bay V Sturt a couple of years ago we got 11,000 and that blew everyones minds.

I'd like to see the reverse of what happened in the 2006-2008 finals once AAMI gets reduced to 25-30k. Play the lead in finals at AAMI, and then the Grand Final at Adelaide Oval. If we continue to get 30-35k for Grand Finals, that will be big enough to provide a great atmosphere at Adelaide Oval.

During the season each club could play 2 neutral games at AAMI as well, and if the lights are kept, then clubs that want to play extra night games can do so there.

I thought the plan was for it to be scaled back to 15k? Will be used as the Crows training base and used for preseason AFL games and a neutral SANFL venue.

With Adelaide Oval will host all the SANFL finals.

Seems the way to go IMO

Surely running two locations would only add to operating costs, and if the Adelaide Oval is used the AAMI site would finish up sold to became an extension of the West Lakes suburbs?
[No matter what is promised now..]

No Crows want to stay there as their base, $20m new facility just built, and becuase of cricket they will need a ground for preseason matches until AO is available.

Think you will find some of the land will be sold off for commercial use

Max Basheer Reserve and the grass areas around the stadium will all go for new housing I reckon.

The Crows facility will remain, the main arena will remain, and I suspect the Members area will remain as is. The rest of the undercover areas (and new stand) will go, and the outer scaled back a bit.

Will probably end up somewhat looking like Waverley - Image

Wedgie - I was in that same queue with you & I didn't even barrack for North or Port. And worse still on GF Day my view of North's only goal was blocked by an umbrella so everything about the 89 GF for me was a waste of time !

The Grand Final wil be played at the new Adelaide Oval. 15,000 is all you need at AAMI. The NAB Cup Round 1 game this year between two Adelaide teams got less than that number so the venue could easily hold NAB Cup games if there is a clash with Cricket. With most Rebacks games moving away from Adelaide Oval there won't be many clashes anyway.

Any bigger than 15,000 and the costs of operating it become too high I would have thought.

When are most redbacks games moving away from Adelaide Oval?

I keep hearing Glenelg Oval as it is the only ground besides Adelaide with a proper cricket scoreboard. (check when you are next at the ground)

And it now has a nice pitch as well. But that is only a contingency should AO not be available for domestic cricket.

The problem is that the SANFL has evolved away from Football Park since the arrival of the Crows in SA and the focus has been more towards playing footy in the suburbs locally.

I think the clubs enjoy having the 10 home games per year a ttheir own venue. I'm not sure they would be that keen to give them up.

Reduce AAMI to 15,000.
Keep it as a Crows training base and for pre-season games.
Port can play home matches there and the Crows can play in the big city stadium.

The cost of running AAMI with reduced seating wont have an impact when footy is contributing nothing to the Adelaide Oval upgrade. Also, didn't the State Govt transfer the land on Max Basheer Oval to the SANFL? If so, did the SANFL pay for it? If not, it would be a bit rich for them to sell it or profit from it, especially when they aren't willing to pay anything to go to Adelaide Oval.
