Close win to the Eagles today.Port were very quick after 1/2 time.
Umpiring left a lot to be desired after 1/2 time IMHO.

There is nothing wrong with it, it's just that some people are silly, like those near the bay.

So my thoughts on the game

Eagles dominant for the first quarter and for most of the second. Port dominant in the third and for the first half of the last.

I thought the move of playing Salter in the centre to begin the match was a good move by Godden. I think it took port by surprise and he managed to get a couple of goals and some damaging possessions before Port were able to react.

Cicca and Powell were brilliant again. These guys are so important to us and have rarely put a foot wrong all season. Lewis was quieter today than usual and Jarrad had another average game.

Hoban is showing some good signs IMO and is certainly a better prospect than Guilhaus. Jacky played an ok game as his first in a while. He seems to be carrying a bit more weight though and isn't as fast as he used to be.

I was really impressed by Port though. There is a hell of a lot of talent coming through and they are a much better side than their 2 wins would suggest. If they manage to stay in the comp next year I reckon they will be big improvers. I don't know a lot of their players but I thought Cloke played really well as did the CHB that was standing Groke. Some of their indigenous lads seem like good prospects to get drafted.

Cicca magnificent today, showed great leadership when it counted.
Thought Port battled hard and threw everything they had at us but just lack a little finnishing class.
Welsh also showed great experience and poise at both ends of the ground.
McKenzie still way off his best form, we'll be a better side when he hits form.
The break has come just at the right time for us as we looked out on our feet at the start of the last 1/4.
I thought Port would run over us but to our credit we dug deep to hold on in a victory for self belief.
Treeby, Stewart Biglands?? back after the break will be nice additions to the side.

Good game of footy.

Salter was probably the difference. When the Eagles looked to be stalling Salter was able to go into the mid-field and give them some run and although I thought it was a little early to do it, half way through the third quarter, moving wElsh to loose man in defence was also important.

Once again, Port close but no cigar. If we could only have two Cloke's. ( Who thought a Port fan would ever say that ). Cloke is impressive as a forward and when in the ruck he wins taps and gets his body over the ball, but when he is rucking we have nobody forward of centre to really compete in pack situations.

The umpiring. First time I have seen ( at this level ) players tell the umpires what the decision should be and the umpire listen. The free kick against Port for a deliberate ruched behind showed just how little the little umpire knew. First the players had to tell him about the rule, then a second umpire had to correct him on where the kick should be taken from.

Once again though Port over run by a better side and us Port folk are getting sick of these close losses. Wins will come though as we have a quick exciting side.

Ports skills once again let them down, 2 of their most skillfull players in Summerton and Clayton had an average day. Eagles seemed to have stopped there mid-field domminance after have time but as was mentioned, Salter into the middle was a great and un-predicted move, good coaching.
Port once again fought back but its the start that is killing us at the moment, went in a qtr time 4 goal down again and lost by roughly that margin, only averaging roughly 14 games amongst the playing group, hopefully they can stay together and get a few more wins before the seasons out.

Good workman-like performance to win.
Port were reasonably good I thought - made some poor skill errors 1st half.

Cicca was very good, as was Geddes.

Salter in the centre of the ground early was a REAL WINNER.

Finally, Godden played Welsh across half back & he dominated the 'air' when allowed that sort of freedom.
The centre square rotations need work IMHO - not sure why you'd have BOTH Lewis & Cicca off the ground @ the same time.

Macca looks like he's really struggling - needs a rest to get over his 'niggles', the BYE will help somewhat.

Overall, the Eagles did what they had to do & that's win the game.

As an aside... a BIG BRICK BAT to SANFL Programming for putting a Maggies home game up against a LIVE TV feed of the 'Evil Over Lords' from Melbourne... How can the Pies make any money, if they have to compete against Power games? Is this a deliberate ploy or just bad luck?
Also, am I the only local supporter who HATES SUNDAY GAMES?
Hopefully, with the Adelaide Oval up & running next season, there will be far more Friday night fixtures.

How good is Matthew Rose?

He has certainly been one of the shining lights for the Maggies this year...

Yeah, I think AFL scouts will be impressed what his progression this year. He works so hard on and off the ball, can play a run with role as well, but still finds the footy himself and has been kicking goals regularly the last month or so.

His forward line smarts are making some of the most respected backline opposition players looking average, he will start commanding more respect in the next few weeks, from memory has kicked 3-3 and 4 in as many weeks.

He is a fantastic half forward. Leads up well, find space, and is a very good kick at goal. He has a fantastic work ethic.

I was very impressed with Corey Beard yesterday, in only his second league game this year, he was fantastic, won alot of the ball and used it very well.
Poor skill errors at crucial times hurt Port yesterday. Summerton marking 25 out and playing on and missing, Clayton and Miklejohn missing in the last qtr, and then Miklejohn turning the ball over in the few minutes.

Did anyone see the second boundary umpire over rule boundary umpire in charge infront of the coaches box in the last qtr? It was the correct decision, but how can the clown 2 metres away not see it but the other clown 50m away see it? He over ruled him about 20 seconds after the decision was made, no wonder the players get frustrated!

Full credit to the Eagles, they looked gone, but with the quality they had all over the ground, pulled themselves over the line.

Again, close but no points.

Some good signs with the reserves winning, Jay Shannon, Justin Hoskin, Tim Walsh and ex Eagle Shane Harris must be pushing for league selection next week.

While Port maybe bottom on the ladder, I think they have the respect of all the competition for getting the most out of what they have got. Out of the 8 losses, only two have been above 30 points. This match was very similar to the Woodville match in Round 2; Port fought back after being 5 goals behind, take the lead, then we were able to gain a buffer at the end.

Cicolella was outstanding; that's all that needs to be said.

What would the Eagles do with out Cica.

Yep, the spray he gave his young team mate for not kicking it to him at the Southern End during the second quarter was outstanding.
