Dreaful effort by the boys today. Too many times we allowed Ryswyk, Ivens, Allan, Wright, Thompson and Armstrong to just run free and feed the ball into their forward line with little or no pressure.

Allan was easily BOG today (probably also broke the record for frees for in a game as well). Fantastic in and under and was equally as good out wide. Ryswyk carved us up on the wing and probably should have kicked 4 or 5 goals.

Our best was Fisher who was his normal courageous self. Also took a candidate for mark of the year in the 2nd term. Green was good although he kept getting knocked from pillar to post. Ferguson was his normal self (we really need one of him forward and one back) and Willits tried hard and was easily our best forward.

Scott Harding was dreadful again and really needs a run in the 2s.

Tony Dey was equally as dreadful. I think he was just making up rules as he was going. How he is still umpiring league beats me.

Big match against Sturt at Mannum next week. They will certaintly come out breathing fire after being comprehensively beaten by the bottom side today.

Obviously missed my bit about Jimmy Allan (who I must add is the best player in the comp).

North were good today but will struggle to challenge the likes of Central, Glenelg and the Eagles over the course of the season (just like us)

North seemed solid most of the day, very good at times. Some of the usual suspects in Allan, Younie and Ryswyk important at important times.
West, meanwhile, were very disappointing after half-time. Not alot across half-forward. Showed they are probably not mature enough as a team to win a game when it could have meant so much to their finals chances.

To use the North vernacular from last week, wasn't today just a case of West Adelaide making North look better than they are?

For most of the day North wern't even made to look better than West, certainly not good and I wouldn't even pencil the South game in as a win let alone games against the rest of the comp.

Re: North v West Match Review

Postby blackandred » Sat May 22, 2010 8:56 pm

Let’s deal with the umpiring first and get it out of the way. Any game where the number of frees exceeds 50 (one every 2 minutes) can’t help but be severely restricted by the men in white. The pedantic officiating at Prospect today reflected badly on the standard of umpiring in this competition. North benefited slightly winning 31 frees to Westies 24.

A lovely sunny Saturday afternoon and ideal conditions saw 2124 people at Prospect. The game itself was an arm-wrestle for 3 Qs. North held a 9 pt margin going into the last Q. Whatever their coach said to them at the break worked wonders as they booted 3 goals in the first 5 minutes, 5 for the Q to Westies late 2 and the match was lost for the Bloods ten minutes into the final term.

North’s skills were better all day while Westies determination kept them in the contest. North played better as a team whereas Westies had too many passengers. The big issue for Westies is their inability to apply scoreboard pressure. The type of footy favoured by their coach is an unattractive AFL based defensive style of game that involves maximum numbers around the ball at all times. At one point in the 3rdQ today the ball was booted into our forward lines where Lobbe was marked by 3 North players, the 4 of them having half the oval to themselves. There aren’t too may things faster in today’s game than a football being cleared from the West Adelaide forward line. When Ferguson went forward late in the game he at least managed to take some grabs and keep the ball in the area.

Q by Q scores:
NA 1Q 2.2 2Q 7.9 3Q 8.11 Final 13.14
WA 1Q 2.6 2Q 4.6 3Q 7.8 Final 9.9

For Westies Willets, Beech and Webb kicked 2 each. Best for Westies were Bricknell, Ferguson, Green, Birss and Piasente. Rowe, Silvester, Thompson, Lobbe and Beech made useful contributions at times. Webb needs to be acknowledged for his wonderful ruck work late in the game. Ben Fisher took a great mark in front of the grandstand. Most of our better players were in the backlines.

Westies passengers included both Carusos, Bennett, Champion, Ezard and Harding. Ezard is so closely checked that the selection people must try something different with him. Bennett is a worry. He gets so little of the ball and is not an accurate kick. He managed 1 behind today and that from a set shot 15 mtrs out on a 45 degree angle although he did give one off.

While we have improved from last year we have really only put together one good win: and that was in round 1, 2 months ago! Unless we can develop a forward system to compliment our strong defensive approach then we will fail to make the final 5. We only average 11 goals a game. Our intensity and toughness today could not be faulted and we fought the game out right to the end. We were beaten by a side that simply had more to play for. Port Adelaide did us no favours by beating Sturt who will be looking to bounce back at Mannum next week.
