SA Hall of Fame (run by the SANFL)

Will there be any inductions this year or will the occasion be dropped again as it was last year?
Lack of money, too busy with Adelaide Oval discussions will probably be excuses used if it is abandoned again.
Has anyone heard if the committee as had any meeting this year to date?
Little respect shown to previous inductees if the process is ignored. (Tradition since 2002, what tradition!!!)

I agree with your sentiments, but it also poses an interesting question. Should there be a certain number of inductees each year? Should there be any? What if the SANFL were in a position where, having considered the quality of the incumbent members, considered there to be nobody else good enough to qualify?

I've often wondered about these clubs where they induct 5 every year. Why not 6? Why not 4, etc? As we all appreciate, due to involvement in the AFL, the chances of having future long term champions in the SANFL are dwindling, so eventually the SANFL Hall of Fame may lose its lustre.

I'd like to hear people's suggestions for likely candidates.

of the modern day players surely for what they do on & off the field both the gowans brothers should be recognised for their contribution, love them or hate them i dont think anyone could disagree that they aren't great value to the sanfl, there a few others i've thought of but lets see if anyone can see who else should go in when their careers are over

Always felt that any HOF should be exclusive with 'extreme prejudice'.

Apart from the first retrospective intake, it should be nigh impossible to get in.

Like the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

So tough to get in that a deserving member such as James Worthy was overlooked a few times before eventually getting in.

Then there's poor old Dennis Johnson, the criminally underrated former Sonic, Sun and Celtic who was snubbed year-after-year and died of a heart attack before being inducted.

Posthumously inducted this year.

It is not the SANFL Hall of Fame, as there is no such thing, there is a SA Football Hall of Fame which is run by SANFL.

Actually its a VERY relevant point in deciding who should be considered.

If it's a SANFL Hall of Fame then by definition its for those who have been the elite in the SANFL and the SANFL only.

But it's the South Australian Football Hall of Fame so the focus is far broader to include contributions to South Australian Football as a whole.

With each passing year this difference becomes more important,
Up until maybe three years ago all inductees have had a strong SANFL link, either in playing in the SANFL or for those that went on to play VFL/AFL by representing the SANFL in State of Origin football.

Peter Kitschke (2005) was probably the notable exception having never played SANFL or AFL, his country football (ie South Australian Football) record considered by the committee to be worthy of induction.

But now with no more State of Origin games and South Australians being drafted to clubs all over the country some with next to no SANFL league games played it will raise some interesting judgements going forward.

Lets look forward 10 years and who will be rated as the most worthy to a South Australian Football Hall of Fame.
a) - Will the Gowans twins that have played such an integral part in the Dogs Dynasty even though they have played minimal AFL and are from interstate. Gavin Colville, another interstater may be a similar example with four club best & fairests and the Eagles games record holder. Or Tim Weatherald, 300 gamer with a Magarey Medal and premiership.
b) - Or would it be a South Australian junior say Matthew Pavlich who is a South Australian but after playing minimal SANFL league footy went interstate and had stellar career at Fremantle.
c) - Or would it be Andrew McLeod who is not a South Australian born & bred, but came to an SA AFL based club and had a stellar career of over 300 games and two premierships?

Now
- a SANFL Hall of Fame would answer a as the others have had minimal SANFL contribution.
- a South Australian Football Hall of Fame may not .... in fact I will be interested to see how they judge these things in the future.

It's the same with the National one, it's the Australian Football Hall of Fame which is ran by the AFL and not called the AFL Hall of Fame. If it was called the AFL Hall of Fame, then why are players like Ken Farmer who never played in the AFL (VFL) and others in it.

Yes, it really added something to the debate didn't it? :)

It does and there is a BIG difference.

Phil H makes a very good point.

The point Phil H makes is the SA Hall of Fame is just as elitist as the National one, perhaps more so. We whinge about the lack of non VFL/AFL players in the national one, but how many players are in the South Australian one who never played top level?

A Hall of Fame eliteist, has to be at some point to mean something.

My question is that as AFL careers becoming increasingly detached from a SANFL involvement will the definiton of inclusion be based on;

a) - Anyones contribution to South Australian Football

b) - A South Australian's contribution to football anywhere

c) - either a) or b) as long as there is a South Australian connection in it

d) - a narrow view where you need to be a South Australian by birth/juniors and unless you made a contribution at the highest level (ieAFL) you will no longer be considered.

I hope its c)

Confirmation that the SA Hall of Fame will be conducted this year in August but from now on will be a biannual event.
No lack of nominees for induction from south Australian sources.

The greatest player during the AFL era to not play AFL football, Garry McIntosh.

Is he eligible yet?

Depends. What is the criteria for nomination?
