The match certainly wasn't one for the archives. The first quarter saw Sturt explode out of the blocks with a couple of quick goals, but that's about as much free flowing football as you were going to see for the day. The Panthers then strangled Sturt out of its running game and the match became a real arm wrestle from then on with not much in the way of good football and a lot in the way of just scrappy, contested, close-in, scrambling scrums going one way or another.

For me, I thought South did a great job in keeping Sturt under pressure. This stopped the Blues from running free, as when they did get the ball away from the packs, they were able to run cleanly, mark up forward and score easy goals. But they were rare moments, in amongst constant too-ing and fro-ing from both sides as they battled from half-forward to half-back and back again. Sturt kicked away in the 3rd to about a 3 goal lead, the biggest lead for the game, but South reeled it in.

Likewise, Sturt kicked away in the last to a 3 goal lead and while South almost reeled it in, this time they couldn't. So the margin was probably a fair reflection of the difference between the two sides.

The most disappointing aspect of the game was the attrocious umpiring. When South had 7 majors on the board, 4 or more were from generally poor frees straight in front of goal. People can whine all they like about whether they were there or not, but I'd dispute some of them strongly. Rewarding players for ducking into tackles to get frees, sends the wrong message and certainly Joyce, an ex-South junior, enjoyed umpiring in the South forward line.

Enuff'said.

For me, glad we got the two points, but a long...... long..... long way to go.

For South fans, umpiring was no reflection on them, they were tough and hard, 100% improvement under Fuller.

I thought he was OK today. There were some moments where he did some great things, but there were also a couple of moments where his kicking let him down. Overall I'd keep him in the team for next week...

Well I'm happy for the 2 points, but once again not happy about the way our game is going.

I've had a rubbish week in jury service :( I am in a letter/speech writing mood. Can someone please give me (and other SANFL supporters) the proper lines to get in contact with Shane Harris? It's now past the time when we should let out feelings known.

Thanks in advance.

well if that is the case then both the WA v PA games in league and U/18 and the ST v SA games in league and U/18 had exactly the same score....

Has this ever happened before?????

Mate, Harris would only read the first line then throw your letter in the rubbish bin like he does with everyones letters that have a little constructive complain about the men in white.

Well said, this is really getting way beyond a joke, Sturt gave away a few stupid frees but when South did the same....not paid. This is diabolical and something needs to be done NOW.
So Mr Shane Harris, Leigh Whicker and all SANFL Footy Operational staff, GET YOUR UMPIRING FEATERNITY ORGANISED AS TO WHAT IS AND WHAT ISN'T A FREE!
ALSO, SORT OUT YOUR 25m PENALTIES, THEY ARE A JOKE AND MAKING YOU, YOUR UMPIRES AND THE COMP LOOK LIKE A JOKE.
From what I heard today, 3rd hand from one of your own officials is that there has been a " Chambo Rule" implemented regarding 25's. Maybe you shouldve included a "Gowans" clause. UTTER RUBBISH!!
Burn me at your will, but what's going on now is just crap.

South are vastly improved and again took it up to us, hopefully their punters have some joy and hope after years of failure, well done and I hope you continue improvement. Sturt have a long way to go if we want tone around in September.
Riley was named BOG for Sturt tonight, his Mum was at the pressos so well done.

IF that is true then it constitutes bias and it becomes quite profound.
IF it is true then it should result in an independent inquiry, sackings if warranted, and an overhaul of the entire system.

I got home from jury service last night shaking and infuriated. Today made it no better, thanks solely to the men in white.

Agreed we got the best of it in the last 1/4 southee. That is not the point. The umpiring was woeful from start to finish, and the free kick count was almost double to South at the end of the day still. And IF what cutterman's informant said is true then it is bad for all of us.

I said to my mate (Sturt supporter) who was angry at the umpires that they would have looked at the stat sheet at 3/4 time and seen South get the frees....I knew they were going to try even them up in the last 1/4. I knew we were gone in a tight contest. They always do try to make it look good for the paper.
