This weekend, the SANFL celebrates Heart Foundation Ladies Round - a weekend marking the many and varied contributions by women to League football.

For the 2nd consecutive year, the Heart Foundation has teamed with the SANFL to promote the round.

As part of Heart Foundation Ladies Round:

- Flashing heart badges will be available at all home grounds for a gold coin donation.

- Home clubs will auction fantastic AFL experiences with part proceeds going to the Heart Foundation.

- All-girls Mini League will be hosted at Alberton and Noarlunga Ovals.

- A special-edition Heart Foundation Ladies Round Budget will be on sale.

Heart disease is the number one killer of Australian women and taking steps to improve your lifestyle - including maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking and keeping active - can help reduce the risk.

BEFORE her son, Ashley (Duncan), got involved in Australian Rules Football, Mandy Duncan found the game ``strange and confusing''.

``Being from New Zealand where they don't play Australian Rules I just didn't understand it all,'' she says.

``I far preferred rugby.''

More than a decade on, Mandy has been a tireless worker at a series of Australian Rules clubs in roles varying from a trainer to her current position as a statistician at Central District, where Ashley plays league football.

``I was doing a trainers' course and to get the qualification you had to spend 50 hours at a sporting club,'' Mandy recalls. ``I thought because I did not like football I should go to a club and see what it's all about.''

Mandy went to St Michael's Old Scholars-West Lakes intending to be there for a few weeks and ended up volunteering for six years as a trainer.

She joined Central Districts as a statistician when Ashley entered the club's senior squad and says she now enjoys the sport and understands it.

This weekend is SANFL Lady's Round and the league is celebrating female volunteers.
