Overpaid Discards & AFL Dropouts...

Postby LPH » Mon May 03, 2010 1:42 pm

There has been plenty of debate @ games recently amongst those in the crowd regarding 'Player Payments' & Salary Caps.
No names, but a former Kangaroo, Crow & Bulldogs player has 'come in for some unjustified criticism', IMHO.

That said, I was wondering which player(s) from your club have & have not been 'value for money' in the post 'Cows' & 'Paar' era?

Port; Ryan O'Connor ?
West / South; Stupido ?
Stephen Trigg & Rob Chapman are SA Football Patriots

On Ryan O'Connor, I would have thought a Magarey Medal was a fair return on investment to some degree.

He was over paid and divided the playing group in his 1 year at North though!

I think Cupido might have kicked 60 goals for us as well.....best ignore LEH's suggestions and just say Welsh

LMAO. Both of the names (which you mentioned  ), have done, and will do more than Scott Welsh after finishing in the AFL. He will kick a goal here and there, but I don't think he was rated that highly to begin with.

Ben Hart was good for the year he spent at North after he finished at the Crows, when he got on the park.

Cant comment on the overpaid segment, but Adam Contessa remains the benchmark of which all other ex AFL players 'quality' will continually be compared to..

I can't think of any for the dogs. From memory, any with AFL experience have being serviceable/valuable for more than one season.

The closest one we would have had was Adrian Wilson but he played a brilliant 1-2? seasons before he ended up leaving.

Those blokes were a bit younger than Welsh so had a bit more time to forge SANFL careers, but I agree with your overall point that Cupido and O'Connor gave good service.

Ben Schwarze would be one, perhaps not talent, but seemingly attitude.
Isaac Thompson returning to the Eagles did nothing. SImilarly Harry Miller back to Port.
From memory Sam Jones wasn't much for the Eagles but was serviceable for West.

Not a big fan of players having a "retirement year" in the SANFL. But I guess while clubs are willing to spend the dough, it will continue.

And leave South alone.

No one can compare to the Jarman years at North, as far as AFL discards go.

Stephen Koops - what a complete waste of a $hit load of money for about 8 games and half of those he was dodgy re his fitness! We got a better return out of Simon Cox with bad knees and a bad back and a $shit load less too!

At least he helped us win a flag, even if it was a reserves flag.

Not too many could compare to Patrick Wiggins. He was useless and expensive for westies.

Doesn't count, as the Eagles had recruited him first.
