Subject to what many people think, the long term prosperity of the SANFL, will depend on the strength of Port and Norwood. It was evident on Sunday night that as cellar dwellers, they were still able to pull nearly 7,000 people. No matter how successfull other clubs are at the moment, or into the future, they will never have the ability to sustain such numbers. A strong comp needs teams teams with a good supporter base. Whether people like it or not, SA footy needs a healthy and vibrant Norwood and Port to keep its place as the premier comp outside the AFL (or the expanded VFL as many people see it).

i wonder how many at the ground were neutrals ? (i know 10 neutrals including me that went), it wasn't because it was a norwood v port match that i/we went it was because there was a game on just like the other 3 sanfl games i went to over the weekend, had it been (with respect) south v west i would have gone as well......cocky comments like this is why some people have a dislike for both clubs, i could add when was the last time these two teams pulled * about 12,000 to a home & away game ?

A crap Port and crap Norwood for years now and the overall crowds at the SANFL have been steadily rising over those years.

Oh sorry voice, i forgot about the massive crowds you were getting when you were nearly finished. This thread isnt about sticking it up any team.Conversley, its about keeping the comp strong. Having a competitive Sturt is also important, as it is Glenelg etc. If any one thinks that a continual weak Norwood and Port will do the SANFL any favours will need their head read. So get off your high horse champ, and think about how you reply.

IIRC I think that crowd (~6 600) is less than the last two Bays v Norwood Friday night Crowds at the parade. Defiantely less than the 7 500 in '08 and last year crowd was a similar amount to Friday nights crowd.
Glenelg now looks more forward to a home game with Sturt compared to one with Norwood or Port.

Sorry AM, but the SANFL have previously released average crowd attendences over the last 10 years, and show Norwood/Port occupying the top 2 positions. You are more than welcome to check this

Let's get one thing straight. The official crowd figure was far less than those who actually attended. Many kids were let in for nothing, and those weren't counted. Only people with tickets were included in that figure.
And who gives a stuff about Glenelg and Sturt, the thread is about the existance of Norwood and Port Adelaide keeping the SANFL strong. If you want to crap on about Glenelg and Sturt, start another thread.

Oh I don't doubt that figure , over the last 10 years, all I'm saying is if you look at it recently -last 2-3 years - the lustre of Port and Norwood crowds has waned to the point where arguably Glenelg and Sturt are the biggest crowd pullers - bandwagonners don't we love 'em. Looks like i was wrong about last years 2009 Bays v Legs crowd, maybe after the 1-3 result the year before 'legs fans decided to stay home??
As i said recently in terms of our budget Glenelg most looks forward to home games with Sturt.
If one of those two traditional rivals were to "fall over" (port and norwood) yes I would miss them (more than some of the other clubs were to disappear) but this competition has proven over the last 130 years its ability to evolve and survive. The next lot of rivals were draw the crowds.

Now let's get another two things straight. Every game has kids let in for nothing and if someone makes a statement someone else is more than entitled to a contrary opinion. Sorry if that harms your sense of entitlement as a Norwood supporter.

Now let's get another thing straight (lol crooked bunch aren't we

) .. The views on display here don't necessarily represent those of all supporters of given clubs in question.
I think it's great that even whilst we're both crap Norwood and Port can still pull big crowds, but from a Norwood perspective the real test comes whenever the day arrives that we're a decent side, to see what our figures are like against the other 7 clubs (IMHO)

Is it any more important that Norwood and Port are 'strong and vibrant' than any other club? We need all of them to be strong don't we?

In the same way that not
every Dogs fan is a flare throwing dole bludging bogan from Elizabeth, not every Norwood supporter believes we're entitled to be successful.

Westies have had a huge increase in crowd numbers since we started playing our share of night games this year. Perhaps Norwood's figures should be viewed in this light (pardon the pun). If all clubs had the support of local council's to contribute to adequate lighting and the night games were shared around evenly, what impact would that have on relative attendances? If anything it would bring Norwood back to the pack I would have thought. I reckon the bays would love night footy down there and really only Noarlunga would not work (If you accept that Elizabeth night games work currently)
