Early Magarey favourites

Postby sjt » Tue Apr 27, 2010 3:35 pm

I noticed someone on another thread has made an early call on Jaensch for the Magarey.
I'll make an early call on Ian Callinan.
Obviously early days yet and many variables, but he's in great form.
Any other stand outs this early in the season?

Without having seen many of the games, you would have to think Callinan, Powell, Jaensch, Allan and Ezard have all gotten off to fair starts.

James Allan and George Thring (North), Nick Liddle (South) and Nick Salter (Eagles - through sheer weight of goals) have all had very sound starts.

Obviously, as mentioned, still a long way to go in the season and many things can happen along the way including form slumps and injury, but if I had to pick a couple from each club, based on games I've seen live and on TV, my list would be as follows:

Central - Ian Callinan, Paul Thomas

Sturt - Tristian Gum, Luke Crane

Glenelg - Ben Kane, Kane Tenace

Eagles - Luke Powell, Nick Salter

North - James Allan, George Thring

West - James Ezard, Scott Bricknell

Norwood - Nick Lower, Keiran McGuinness

Port - Luke Slattery, Mark Dolling

South - Nick Liddle, Andrew Horne

James Allan easy. He should have had it again last year.

I'll second that. He tore Port a new one in Round 1.
Great player.

I don't know if he's a Magarey vote-getter but I'd say Ben Fisher would be leading our B&F right now.

Having seen all Westies games this year I partly agree but I'd think he'd be fighting for that position with James Ezard and Scott Bricknell as well !!

Steve Summerton will poll well, at least 2 votes probably 3 when North played Port.
Jimmy Allan will be up there as usual.

George Thring?? Seriously.

Can someone please make a sensible case for this suggestion. North fans perhaps a round by round summary or something. I don't think he would have polled a vote in the past would he.

Round 3, 3 point win over Port: 15 kicks, 4 marks, 8 handballs

Round 4: 54 point win over South: 19 kicks, 5 marks, 17 handballs. Would likely fight it out with Allan for the 3 votes here.

Round 5: 3 point loss to Glenelg: 19 kicks, 4 marks, 7 handballs, 5 frees for.

Doesn't have a hope in hell, and you can put up as many stats as you want.

3rd Best in a losing side against Glenelg and 2nd best best in a win over South would give him a max of 4 votes from 5 rounds. Stats are reasonable but early magarey contender may be a bit hyperbolic. What is he paying with the bookies? Could be a value bet if the forum judges are correct!

Nick Liddle for the mighty panthers would have to be up there. been best for the club twice and other two in the best aswell. With two wins and a draw for the club. On the bottom of every pack under the umpires noses.

Big ask to win it with the likely hood of south finishing outside the top few spots

I'd have a wager on Nick Liddle at this early stage too. Would have caught the attention of the men in white with a super 1st game.

Yep, I'd go along with that he'll have at least 3 votes after the game at the Bay.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
