Standard of SANFL this year?

Just me or is it rubbish? And no, not just from watching Norwood.

I went to Eagles/Port last week, I've watched all 3 ABC games, and to me the standard has dropped a notch. Poor skills, so many ugly stoppages, umpires worse than ever before.

What's going on?

Stepped up this year if you ask me. I've been to at least 7 games this year and I reckon the skills are better than I've seen for a while. Umpires are shocking though

Eagles Port game .Port were crap with skills in the first 1/4 and a bit woeful.
Yesterdays skills were very not good either at woodville.
Umpires I thought yesterday were better than in round 2 not so many 25metres paid.

My goodness! How many 25 metre penalties were dished out the week before then? I can recall at least 7-8 times Norwood players were being marched back 25 metres yesterday. No Eagles players of course.

And I can certainly understand you thinking the umpires were pretty good yesterday. If I were an Eagles fan, I'd feel the same way.

With that quoting we could claim you as an Eagles supporter Adelaide Hawk!

Have only seen most of each of the three games on telly. My thoughts:
Round 1, Sturt were flat and ordinary, probably due to the NT experiment. South's skills weren't any better than previous years, but there imptoved work-rate, desire and attack on the ball made for an intriguing game.
Round 2, Port had a good crack but let Eagles off the hook with some poor skills, Eagles were a bit rusty, but reasonable enough for their first game.
Round 3, conditions looked pretty blustery, thought Glenelg's skills were ordinary, Sturt weren't silky but pretty good considering the conditions.
Overall, about the same, perhaps a very small margin down.
I wonder if we are confusing skills with lack of flair when considering the attraction of a game? Sturt, Glenelg and North all seem to have toned down their attacking flair and pace over the last couple years to try and match Centrals in the harder, more accountable style of footy.

Its frigging awful, a slow decline started about 5 years ago but its become steep in the last 2 years.
Some SANFL clubs try to play the AFL style that was in vogue before Geelong revolutionised the AFL and don't have the skills to pull it off.
Amateur, Country Footy or SFL is more appealing to watch than the current SANFL standard.
Go watch a couple of VFL games, much better to watch. (WAFLs probably same but I haven't seen any recently)
Let the abuse begin but that's my opinion.

I like to go to catch up with mates I don't live near and get out from the house and have some hope I might occasionally see something entertaining.
Sue me.

The problem is people forget there is a social aspect to football. After all, the worse the footy, the more I drink.

Of course, plus we're all masochists who are gluttons for punishment ... the more we're disappointed, the more we keep coming back for more.

I agree with the idea that "AFL style" is influencing the game;

1. The 'pressure cooker' centre square - too many rugby scrums
2. The umpiring is FAR MORE "AFL" in it's interpretation of 'rules'
3. The 'pace' of players has increased @ the EXPENSE of skill level (again, AFL influenced coaching).

As for not living close Wedgie (Reynella???) mate, you are 1/2 way to Adelaide Oval from MY place @ Compass !!! LOL

'Chippy' & I go to catch up with 'Eagle Pals' & besides, it's MY 'binge drinking day' ;)
Also, it beats the hell out of going to 'Arctic Park' to watch Port or Crows

WOuld this be the same person that complained about junior footy being played and that he "only" had an hour and 10 minutes to get from Unley Oval to Adelaide Oval to catch a state game.

lmao, he's got you there LEH! Nice one Smithy!

Back on topic, I just had the priviledge to watch the last half of the Freo v Geelong game, now THAT is how football should be played! No wonder the Power and Crows are so bad with their players having to come back through the SANFL and try and adjust to the AFL.

So that's why Norwood Oval is now called Coopers Stadium.

The better teams in the SANFL play a higher standard game than the Melb V Crows game yesterday

Standard appears better than last year as the speed of the teams has increased with maybe some skills being left behind due to the increased pace of the game. Sadly with 2 new AFL teams ready to plunder both junior and many mature age players in next 2-3 years these could be considered the last of glory days for our comp :( .
