I dont recall the year, yet they actually applied to join the VFL at the same time as St Kilda, St Kilda were chosen over Port Melbourne to join the VFL as it was suggested that Port Melbourne did not have an appropriate off field culture and St Kilda supposedly did, and amongst VFL supporters that point has been discussed in history many times over.
I don't think that is correct. St Kilda were inaugural members of the VFL, having been in the VFL since 1897.
In 1977 Port Melbourne, as premiers in the VFA, wanted to play Fitzroy, wooden spooners in the VFL in a match as a curtain raiser to the replay of the drawn VFL Grand Final.
At about that stage Port Melbourne had more members than their near neighbour South Melbourne. In fact, I have heard Bobby Skilton say that he never supported a VFL side as a kid, but rather barracked for Port Melbourne.
