Think there is currently discussion on revamping the VFL comp to the mentioned feeder comp.

This would leave the current stand alone VFL sides out in the cold.

Interesting, wouldn't be as costly for trips to Melbourne for away games as it would have been if the NT team has come in, but would still imagine costs would be the major limitation along with the time players would need to take off work and or study while they are still not all full time.

Port Melbourne are an interesting club, they are as mentioned above a stand alone side in the VFL and as you can imagine there are reasons for that and politics that go along with it. Port Melbourne are also one of the oldest football clubs and prior to the formation of the AFL were often discussed as entering the VFL at some stage. I dont recall the year, yet they actually applied to join the VFL at the same time as St Kilda, St Kilda were chosen over Port Melbourne to join the VFL as it was suggested that Port Melbourne did not have an appropriate off field culture and St Kilda supposedly did, and amongst VFL supporters that point has been discussed in history many times over.

I think that Port Melbourne suggesting they are interested in joining the SANFL is to safegaurd their own interests in the VFL because of some of the current political problems and perhaps the threat of going to the SANFL becomes more of a bargaining chip as opposed to their actual intention. That said however its not unlikely at some stage that a club will approach the SANFL for admission to the competition from another State if the SANFL can consolidate its position as the highest standard of football outside of the AFL. The actual SANFL was founded with a Victorian team as a founding member, so its not without precedent.

If the SANFL does not expand and represent all metropolitan areas of Adelaide equally it will die over time and the SANFL administration need to look at how they can ensure that SANFL football is played locally across Adelaide equally including in the expanding areas. At the same time if options like the above are realistic then why not look into it, the additional media attention would hardly be a bad thing for the SANFL!

I don't think that is correct. St Kilda were inaugural members of the VFL, having been in the VFL since 1897.

In 1977 Port Melbourne, as premiers in the VFA, wanted to play Fitzroy, wooden spooners in the VFL in a match as a curtain raiser to the replay of the drawn VFL Grand Final.

At about that stage Port Melbourne had more members than their near neighbour South Melbourne. In fact, I have heard Bobby Skilton say that he never supported a VFL side as a kid, but rather barracked for Port Melbourne.

What's the date of that news segment? If this is recent then things might still be in the works. If it is old news and there haven't been any follow ups then it is probably as Sojourner says; just a bargaining chip and things are happening behind the scenes right now to appease Port Melbourne, and stop any threatened move to the SANFL.
I would be interested in them joining. I have always thought that if a new entry ticks all the boxes required then get them in to the SANFL straight away. An interstate club would create more media focus and interest in the SANFL. I don't know the situation regarding finances, (both SANFL and Port Melb's) but if that can be sorted out I don't see any reason why they shouldn't join.
