Player Trading in the SANFL.

Postby Sojourner » Fri Feb 19, 2010 12:49 pm

I dont know if this has ever been covered before here or not, yet does anyone know if in the history of the SANFL, players have ever been simply traded from one club to another for another player of similar ability?

I have noticed that at the end of SANFL seasons there are players that leave their SANFL clubs for various reasons and look for another club to take them on. If two different players were in this position and willing to be traded to recieve similar coin, is there anything to stop the clubs making an official swap of contracts?

Nothing at all. A contract can be torn up if both parties agree, which is the case in the situation you describe. Then the new club for each player will write up a new contract.

Old timers would remember the trade between North and Norwood of Maurice Martin for Barry Hearl. Maurice Martin, who had kicked six goals on debut for North was the son of legendary North full back Owen Martin and there was some angst amongst North supporters when they swapped him for a former Norwood under 19.

I think Martin only played one game for Norwood and Hearl played in two North premierships so I think that was one swap that North one.

Another swap that North won with was Steven Sims and John Roberts for Grenville Dietrich and North's under 19 captain John Glasson.

A slight loss for North was the swap of Brodie Atkinson for Scott Sutherland, although Sutherland did go on to captain the roosters.
