MAGAREY medallist Brett Backwell is willing to risk his immediate future in the SANFL as he tries to lead Waratahs to the NTFL flag.

Backwell admits he finds himself in a "Catch 22" situation with South Australian giants Glenelg who demand the 29-year-old commit wholly and solely to their upcoming season.

It is understood he has been issued an ultimatum by Tiger officials to stop playing in the Top End and honour his one-year contract with the club, or persist with Waratahs and risk that contract being torn up.

Backwell told the Northern Territory News that he is just as committed to suiting up for the Red and White in its February 20 qualifying final as he is to walking out on to Gliderol Stadium for the Tigers' season opener against Norwood.

``Ideally, I'd like to do both,'' he said. ``It's not every day that you get to play in a finals series, but it's pretty clear that Glenelg aren't happy for me to do that.

``What I do now is butt heads with the footy club.

``I've enjoyed seven or eight good years with Glenelg and I'd like to think I can look forward to playing some more good and hopefully successful football with them.''

Glenelg officials denied they ``blocked'' Backwell from playing for Tahs against Nightcliff on Sunday, but are sternly against the midfielder adding to his four games now that pre-season is in full swing.

Tigers football manager Ken Applegarth said a verbal agreement between the player and coach Mark Mickan had been reached before Christmas, permitting Backwell to play only three matches for Waratahs and none in the New Year.

``We have intra-club matches in February now and the season starts in March, so there isn't much room to negotiate more games,'' Applegarth said.

Backwell (pictured) denies any such agreement was made.

``I told them I was playing one match and from there it was for me and Waratah coaches to decide how many I played, be it seven, eight or nine,'' he said.

He's still training with the Bays, and is looking as fit and healthy as always!
By getting some NT matches under his belt at least he can put into practice what we're doing at training, and he will be match fit and ready to go when the season proper begins.

Apparently the Warratahs won't be playing too many weeks of finals. So as long as his body remains fit and healthy, he keeps doing the right thing on the training track and isn't doing anything to make front page headlines either in SA or the Eastern states, What is the fuss about?

All will be revealed soon enough. The old bunster may get up a few noses; but is often on the money.

Suggest with his annual shopping of himself around, average attitude and deteriorating body, the bays would be better without him anyway. Will be good call I'd say.
